Michael's Story

Life Graduated in 1973. Was married to Linda Swain for 15 years and before getting divorced. Had 1 daughter Angela who now has 2 children. Since graduation, I have been in the construction field usually in the architectural woodwork profession as a project manager or estimator. After my divorce and the urge to see our great nation firsthand, I have taken jobs as a project manager in such places as Jax, FL, Lewisburg, WV, Bristol, TN, Albq, NM, Denver CO and back to VA in northern VA. These opportunities allowed to me be involved in woodwork projects in various states of the USA including NY city and Washington DC. Without a doubt, the 2 most rewarding projects was the past 5 years which where my involvement in the rebuilding of the wedge at The Pentagon on the area that was attacked by terroist on 9/11/01. I felt it to be an honor and a priviledge to be a part of rebuilding this within 1 year of the destruction. As part of my involvement, I was rewarded and allowed to take 3 fellow co-workers to the 9/11/02 Remembrance Ceremonies presided by President George Bush and Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfield. This allowed me to take some very historical photos. Following the completion of The Pentagon my company was selected to ...Expand for more
provide approximately $6M of interior architectural millwork and display cases for the new National Museum of the American Indian in DC. This new Smithsonian building had a design unlike any of the Smithsonian buildings in DC as there are bascically no square corners as the design was imputted by native americans. Located across from The Capitol Building, I was able to be at this project during it's 3 year duration from the excavating to it's grand opening in September of 04. The pressures of such a project where large but the rewards where overwelming as I experience so much that occurs in DC. From driving down Constitution at least 2 times a week to being there during the funeral of Ronald Regan and the inauguration of President Bush. Both of these projects won awards from the Washington Building Congress and both featured interviews that I have given to a major woodworking magazine. Amazing that someone without a college degree, but a diploma from a small school like Rustburg High could leave Campbell Co and become involved in such things. Dated a lot, got engaged once in 1999 but didn't work out. Small town boy has had enough of DC for a while and has came back to the WV company I worked for some 10 years ago. Time flies..
