At MHS I was active in the band and orchestra. When I moved (back) to Marblehead from New York in 1963, I was a greaser and received my fair share of abuse. The look didn't last long. My best friends were Larry Chilnick and Kenny Schwartz. We hung out at the King's Rook and were fairly drunk most weekends. Following graduation from MHS in 1965 I attended University of Massachusetts (Amherst) and graduated in 1969 with a B.A. in Pre-dental/Zoology. I attended University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine and graduated with a DMD in 1973. From 1973-1974 I did a Dental Residenciy at Jewish Hospital of St. Louis and then returned to Salem, MA. I practiced dentistry as an associate with dental practices in Lynn and Lowell. In 1975 I opened a dental practice in Salem, which I ultimately sold in 1980, was commissioned as a Dental Officer in the U.S. Publlic Health Service, and took my first assignment with the Indian Health Service (IHS) in Bethel, AK. I worked in Bethel for 4 years, servicing an area the size of Oregon and consisting of 50 Eskimo and Athabasken Indian villages. It was the adventure of a lifetime and the hardest work I ever did.
