Michael's Story

After graduating from Courter Tech, I attended the University of Cincinnati. There, I majored in Political Science with a minor in Business Administration. During my stint at UC, I got interested in theater and creative writing. This idea was bolstered by me performing in a myriad of community theatrical productions including the Mighty Gents, "Smokin Room", Purlie Victorious and Wine in the Wilderness to name a few. I also appeared on local WCPO TV shows including, Juvenile Court and Dr. Kincaid's Casebook. Soon, this hobby became a passion. In the summer of 1979, I moved to Los Angeles. With no family, contacts or friends there, I was able to land a job at Universal Studios as a Tour Guide. What an experience. I got to see first hand inner workings of a major motion picture studio plus I got an opportunity to hone my communication skills. Later that summer, I auditioned for an industrial show sponsored by the Atlantic RIchfied Company (ARCO). This PR program toured the US demonstrating to masses, media outlets and governmental agencies about gasoline conservation at a time when the general public had an indifferent attitude towards oil companies. Through this exposure, I was able to glean so much especially my skills to showcase myself in public and the media, whether print, radio and television. Matter-of-fact, that program won the Silver Anvil award for best PR program that year - this recognition is the highest nod for the PR world. I also met my future writing partner (Eric Stein) during that time. We both hit it off and talked about writing TV Shows, films and books. Did the fact that we knew very little about any of this - NO. After the ARCO gig, we both got accepted in the NBC Page Program. What an alumni of individuals, some ...Expand for more
of our fellow pages have been and still are some of the most influential shakers and movers in the entertainment industry. There at NBC, we met an incredibly talented animator named Phil Mendez. Phil had worked for Hanna-Barbera, Ruby Spears and the Walt Disney Company. Phil had also created and produced animated two shows on the network - "FOOFUR" and "KISSYFUR." Phil later got an assignment to produce an international animated program called "STAR STREET" which he asked us to take a crack at writing an episode. After an enormous amount to time resisting the request - we did it. Then we did another and another. We were now animation writers but we wanted more. We wanted to write any and everything but we knew we needed to study and practice. We took seminars, writing classes and became relentless in developing our craft. Our first full screenplay was entitled "Lemonade." "Lemonade" to our surprised won several screenwriting competitions which gave us cred to do more. Over the years we have written two award winning children's book titles, "White Water" and "Granddaddy's Turn" both of which were nominated for NAACP Outstanding Children's Literature. "White Water" was made into a TV Movie which aired on TV ONE. "White Water" was the highest rated Made for TV Movie TV One has ever produced. That feature also was nominated for a slue of awards - we are very proud of this. Through the course of things I have been a COSBY USC Screenwriting Fellow and have received raves reviews for my writing including the New York Times. Current projects are a third children's book, "Northbound." I have been fortunate to have an incredible publishing organization behind me - CANDLEWICK Press. I am currently repped by William Morris Endeavor Agency.
