Michael's Story
Life
I'm in Dallas, TX, writing this short bio in November 2005. I don't live here -- I'm on the road for a project that should last into the Spring of 2006. Colorado Springs, Tulsa, Cedar Rapids -- all heartland USA locations for this project, far from the ocean I love. And, far from my family - wife and two teen-aged daughters. It's been quite a year - a lot of miles, a lot of nights in hotels. Hopefully, a couple of years of this, at most, then, perhaps, early "retirement" (scaling down), and just perhaps, a lengthy cruise on our own vessel. That's the dream.
I've had a generally good life with all the highs and lows, bumps and bruises you'd expect to accumulate by the time you get to your fifties.
No, I didn't become an oceanographer as I once thought - but I did teach scuba for a few years (met my wife that way), moved to the NJ Shore area, and have become an avid sailor (we both are, and have made a couple of interesting voyages offshore, and truly hope our health and finances hold up until we can cut the docklines and follow the sun for a while). Oceanography gave way to environmental sciences which gave way to computer science on the slow scenic tour to my degree. And the Navy? (Remember, NROTC scholarship). Never commissioned, never active duty - but I now volunteer for the Coast Guard Auxiliary.
I've done some innovative and recognized work in my field - interspersed with the mundane and routine, exasperating and stressful. Always long hours. And, most importantly, I've had some fun and lots of fulfillment. I've worked with many good people: colleagues, clients and others; worked for some good companies: E&Y, GE, Sun Micro. At my age and experience level, I now seem to have turned a corner where I'm quite serious about what I do - while also looking forward to the time when it's over.

iences. Maybe we'll talk over a beer about them someday while you share some of your stories, too.
And I have one memory I could lose.
I was at the World Trade Center on 09/11/01. I was headed to our offices on the 25th floor of the South Tower for a meeting. After disembarking from a ferry at South Street Seaport I walked across to the WTC to find the North Tower burning, a crowd assembling, and an emergency cordon being set up. I walked right up to the South Tower doors, stopping about 50 feet away. I tried dialing up to my team to see what their intentions were - after all, I thought, why go up just to get evacuated down again? At that point, the second plane flew over my head. I needed to sprint almost a block to escape the radius of falling debris. I left the area, eventually catching a ferry off the island after both towers fell - even at the East River, we were covered in dust.
Amongst everything else, there are several things that haunt me about the experience. First, I had my youngest daughter in the WTC just four days earlier ("come with me - it'll be an adventure!"). Second, had I not stopped to evaluate the situation, I would have most likely been in the elevator when the second plane hit - and blew the cars out of their shafts. And third, like far too many of us, I had a good friend not come home from work that day. A good guy with a great family. We had joked about his Y2K contingency plans just a year before (he ran a data center). Not a day goes by without remembering this event.
It's why I signed up at Classmates. Several days after 09/11, I finally responded to one of the Classmates ads, as I found myself curious about former friends.
Drop me a line if you want ... m j b a u e r a t m o n m o u t h d o t c o m should get you to me. I'd like to hear from you. And, best wishes/best regards to all of you.
