Michael's Story

Life After graduating high school, I made somewhat of a career out of college - going to Auburn, Birmingham-Southern, and back to Auburn where I graduated in 1965. I got engaged the night I graduated to a girl from Hewitt, class of 1961 - Janice Burns and went into the Army as a 2lt I was discharged in 1967 and went to work for Alabama Power Company and was with them for 33 years, 7 months, retiring March 2001. I have worked in Clanton, where I met my wife of over 50 years Bo Martin, Montgomery, Demopolis, Jasper and finally Birmingham. I remained active in the Army Reserves, retiring in 1993 as a Lieutenant Colonel. We now live in Clanton, Alabama and have a daughter working with the Department of Agriculture in Opelika and a son that is married and lives in Mt. Olive. He teaches at Shades Valley High School and is the Wrestling Coach at Shades Valley High School. and also drives a bus for the school. He and Jacqueline presented me with a new grandson on April 8, 2005 - Jackson Martin Blankenship and a new granddaughter, Kindall Renae Blankenship on January 30, 2007. During my retirement I have gone on disaster relief project in Brewton, AL, Mobile, AL, Lake Charles, LA, New Orleans, LA, Bolivar, MO, Richmond, KY. Marion IL, Geraldine, AL, Boones Chapel, AL, Autaugaville, AL, Pratt City, AL, Gardendale, AL, New Bern, NC, Staten Island, NY, Fairfield, AL, Monroe, LA, Baton Rouge, LA, West Plains, MO, Fairfield, AL, Fort Meyers, FL, Jacksonville, AL Mission, TX, G...Expand for more

I have gone on mission projects in Thailand, Ecuador, Guatemala and Costa Rica. I must also confess that I have had a lapse into my second childhood in that I have bought a 2001 Harley Davidson Sportster. I finally came to realize at the ripe age of 82 that I needed to sell it and did so. II Was inducted into the Golden Eagles at Auburn. Should have been a few years back if I had buckled down and studied. Three (3) important things happened 50 years ago on June 3rd. I received my commission in the Army, received my diploma and got engaged which was broken by Janice with a phone call late at night while I was on active Army duty. 50 years later I think two out of three ain't bad and even better due to her breaking the engagement and God putting Bo in my life. I wasn't mad at Janice for breaking the engagement as she was my first love and later got in contact with her on an email basis. However, she recently broke that contact with the excuse that her husband didn't want her to have contact with me. I thought that was very ironic as she was being so responsive to him which made me wonder why she let him basically steal her from me while we were engaged. Did she think I didn't mind her not being faithful to me and was in contact with another man? Wow, what an idiot I was to even ask her to marry me. Thank God it didn't happen!
