Michael's Story

Since graduating from BHS, I Joined the Army in Nov. of 1970 and had basic training at Ft Leonard-Wood, Mo., Had my advanced training in communications at Ft Gordon, Ga and finished up with permanent duty stationed in Hoechst, Germany (near Frankfurt) with the 32nd Signal Battlion, 201st Sig. Co (field communications) and B Company (signal messenger/courier.) After returning state side, I worked Security at the Ft St Vrain nuclear plant for almost a decade, worked at Union Supply company after that for over a decade splicing converyor belts and specializing in hydraulic couplings, then went to work with one of the contract job services for a year Worked with Hugh M Woods for 15 years, worked at Walmart for a couple of years and from that point forward I have been working as a sports correspondent/reporter for Metro West News, (Brighton Blade, Ft Lupton Press, Commerce City Sentinel Press and the Carbon Valley Farmer and Miner. I have been coaching youth sports in the Brighton area for over 30 years now. Started with youth Tackle football, and has been mostly in the cities recreational programs for the last 17 years in Flag Football and Basketball.I am also a freelance photo/journalist (Visionary Images Photography- Visionary Images Press and a life member of the International Freelance Photographers Organzation) and do historical research and writing for Auto Racing Memories and the Colorado Automobile Racing Club and a few other auto sports related websites. ading to Utah soon for Job Corp. Rhonda works at Superior Medical Management The family is also heavy into auto racing. I drove part time for 6 years in dirt Late Models out of state, then enjoyed a season locally at Colorado National Speedway, when it was a dirt track, in the Sportsman Division. I now work as a promoter for the local auto racing scene, setting up display dates and other gigs for a few of the racing clubs and various owners and drivers. Scott is currently a board member with the Colorado Automobile Racing Club. He has driven for 4 years now in the Modified Coupe division. You all will remember these as the cars that ran at the olde Lakeside Speedway in the 50's - 80's Mark had been known as the Jr. Flagman at Colorado National and has flagged actual races there as well as at Big Country Speedway in Cheyenne, Wyoming, I-25 Speedway in Pueblo, at El Paso County Speedway in Calhand, Co. and at I-76 Speedway in Ft. Morgan. He had gained a large fan base at each of these tracks and has been lauded by most of the racing community for the great job he has done at these tracks as a guest flagman! He started out with the flags at age 6 at Colorado National and has been doing it to this point. We set up in turn 2 at the track and invite other kids to come over and learn about the flags and have them assist Mark. Mark will bow out once he heads for Job Corp (Update: Mark took over the assistant flagman position in 2011 at Colorado National as a member of the NASCAR Wehlen Series) If you ever attend the races at Colorado National, please stop by over in turn 2 and say hi!. I would love to hear from all my former classmates and friends.
