Michael's Story
Life
Mike Sumner (step-dad's) was my name in H.S. After Edmonds H.S., I went to Everett J.C. for 2 quarters then join the Air Force. In the Air Force, I was trained as an electronics technician and worked on Bomb/Navigation flight simulators. My training was at Lowry A.F.B. in Denver after which I was given all the shots for over seas and sent to the foreign country of Abilene, Texas. From there, I was transferred to Alamogordo, New Mexico until discharge in 1/70. I then attended 1 semester at U. of Nevada at Reno while working as a Keno writer on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe. Several institutions and jobs later, I graduated from U.W. with a degree in English in 12/74. I tried teaching, but quickly learned I was not cut out for the job. I quit in the middle of the school year hoping I could get on at McDonalds. I ended up completing an electrical apprenticeship at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard where I worked from 7/76, to 1/85. I then went to work for B.P.A. as a Meter & Relay Craftsman and lived in the Tri-Cities. In August of 98, I transferred into operations and have worked as a Dispatcher in Spokane, but now in Vancouver,WA first as a Gen...Expand for more
eration Dispatcher, and now as a Senior System Dispatcher. I'm married, 34 years on 3/20/05, to Mary ÂKirschner who graduated from Blanchet in '66 and U.W. in 1973. We have 3 kids, the youngest of which just turned 25 and our daughter, the oldest who is also a U.W. grad, turned 30 and gave herself a sky diving lesson as a gift. For 11 years, 88-99, I reffed soccer which was my passion. Golf became my passion after moving to Spokane. Now, instead of making money from my hobby, I pay out. (I thought we were supposed to grow wiser as we aged) Mary and I, after years of saving air miles and talking about it, went to Europe in 9/00 for 28 days. We traveled with another Edmonds grad, Rick Steves- well at least his book. We cursed him at times in beautiful, remote places as they seemed full of people carrying his guidebooks. Last year we took the train from Vancouver down to California wine country with friends and finally made it to Harrison Hot Spring this Valentines Day weekend. I'm looking forward to our reunion this fall. If anyone makes it down to Vancouver, WA and would like to say ÂhiÂ, please feel free to call. WeÂre in the phone book.
