Michael's Story
I didn't graduate with the LPHS class of '74, as my family moved to Colorado in the summer of '72, between my sophomore and junior years. However, I grew up in Bloomingdale, and went all through grade school, junior high, and two years at Lake Park with some of my first childhood friends. I still have a strong heart connection to those times.
After leaving the Chicago area, I graduated from high school in Castle Rock, Colorado--which was completely different from Lake Park . I lived in Colorado through college and for several years after, where I began a career in cable and satellite television. I also got married and started a family. Later, I lived in Virginia, near Washington DC, Dallas, and Connecticut.
I now live in Austin, Texas, with my wife, Megan, and our two young boys--Dylan, age 10, and Kaden, age 9, and two labradors.. Life is full of adventure and fun. We love where we live--about 10 miles west of the city center, at the edge of Texas Hill Country, in a great community with lots of greenbelt area and hiking trails, creeks, and a couple of swimming holes. Taking my guys fishing, camping, or on hikes and hill climbing are typical weekend activities.
I also have two grown kids from my first marriage--Sean and Lisa-- both successful and happy and living in Denver. Sean is married and has three adorable little girls, so I am also a proud grandpa. (Consequently, my little boys are uncles.)
I had a very successful career in telecom for many years, and then transitioned to renewable energy about 7 years ago. In between, I had a brief and not-so successful career in real estate investment and renovation, where I was able to erase most of my earlier successes when the market crashed. :-)
I have a solar energy business development company that does fairly well, and my wife has a strong career in philanthropy. Together, we also have a successful partnership with Rodan & Fields in the skincare industry. We are expanding our Rodan & Fields business to Canada this year, and are creating a growing team of savvy entrepreneurs that are growing their businesses, and that will eventually fund our boys' and college and a comfortable retirement.

ee that I have achieved most of the things that I had wanted to do.
I grew up thinking I wanted to be a pilot, like my father. I got my pilot's license when I was in college, and had a brief job as a pilot--long enough to decide that flying planes is hours of boredom interspersed with moments of terror, and it's better to be a passenger in First Class than the guy up front. So I pursued a career that afforded lots of opportunity for air travel.
I love to travel. I have been to all 50 states and 20+ countries. My favorite cities are Istanbul, Paris, Hong Kong, New York, and Austin. I spent a year in Australia, criss-crossing that country and working my way around the coast. I have climbed many of the highest peaks in North America, and I have Scuba-dived in some of the most beautiful seas in the world. I have contemplated with awe the architectural monuments of the cathedral in Chartre, the castle in Edinburgh, the Sydney Opera House, the palace at Versailles, the Dome in Florence, and Inca ruins in Peru.
There are still a few places I want to go and things i want to do on my bucket list. Climbing Kilimanjaro is one of these, and I have just booked that trip for August 2020.
In the meantime, I can look all around me and see much that I have to be thankful for, and how truly fortunate I am to have the things that are most important to me-- the love and friendship of the great lady I married; two terrific little boys that, although they are a handful and test my patience, make me laugh every day; my grown kids, who turned out to be fine adults, and make me proud; my health; and many good friends. I didn't get to this place without going through the School of Hard Knocks-- I am an Honors Graduate-- and screwing up plenty. I would like to have a couple of do-overs, but instead I look forward to more make-betters. And I also am finding it fun and interesting to reconnect with old friends...people that I used to be close to, but lost track of over the years. I guess that's a sign of age, because I am not nostalgic, but it's been remarkably easy to rediscover common bonds that were created long ago.
Reading this, I sound like I'm dying, or some old fool. I'm definitely not dying, so the fool part is probably right. Cheers!
