Michael's Story
Life
What can I say. Life didn't start off all that great for me but I managed with the help of family and friends. If it wasn't for my parents adopting me and supporting me through all the rough spots I know I wouldn't be here now. The early years where very difficult. I hate Elementary School. Kids can be very mean at that age. Things got better in Junior High School and a bit better in High School. I do miss some of the friends from High School and wish them the best in life. Things in my life are better that they have ever been. As the song goes, The futures so bright I gotta wear shades!
School
Not much to say really. I seem to get along with some people and not others just like everybody else. I had some fun times and some bad ones. Did a few things I may have regreted and some I would never undo. But after all is said and done I would never wish to repeat the experience. Especially Elementry and Junior High school.
College
College was a growing experience for me. I started off at Michigan Technological University in the Civil Technology program and ended up graduating at Western Michigan University in Education with a Mathematics Major and a Health Education Minor. I remember always working through college. I enjoyed Michigan Tech the...Expand for more
most but if I hadn't gone to Western Michigan I would not have met my wife. Western was more a suitcase college so I didn't feel that people were very friendly with each other. MTU was quite a different story. I joined Alpha Phi Omega, a National Co-Ed Service Fraturnity at MTU which was a great time. There are times that I miss the college life. Not as many worries as now. Loads less money but you didn't care because it all worked out.
Workplace
What can I say, it is a dog eat dog world out there. The economy is tough and employers expect a lot. I started off work after college as a long term sub teacher in Kalamazoo/Portage MI area and got a teaching job in Burnsville, MN. That lasted a school year. I got really sick of the political BS that is in schools. I worked tons of hours, tried my hardest, and older teachers that felt threatend by your energy try to make you look bad. I spent 20% of my own income on teaching materials. I can say I was deeply disillusioned by the educational field. Then I decided to get into computer programming. Not bad. A few companies later and I am still programming away. Much better than teaching. I miss helping students learn but I do not miss the political back-stabbing of disgruntled teachers and administrators.
