Michael's Story

Family: Happily married to Marianne (McAvoy) of Brooklyn, NY since May 1976. Our son Andrew and daughter Ruth, both graduates of Creighton University, Omaha, NE are both happily married with children: Samuel, Anderson, and Liam (Andrew), and Felicity and Natalie (Ruth). Ruth is an elementary teacher here in Bellevue, NE and Andrew is a Section Supervisor at the Regional Veterans Affairs Headquarters in Milwaukee, WI. Interests: Besides spending time with family and grandchildren, still enjoy all kinds of music (Gordon Lightfoot, John Denver, Eagles, various Country and Folk artists, Beach Boys, Doobie Brothers, and other old rock), playing guitar (Taylor 12-string) with friends and with church choir; fishing, hiking, reading (historical fiction and non-fiction), do-it-yourself projects, collecting coins, 1:18 scale diecast racing and sports cars (could never fit in or afford a real one, so I fantasize what it's like!) and model aircraft, of course. Enjoy volunteering for Habitat for Humanity, Church activities, and our local Food Pantry, and donating Blood Platelets every couple of weeks for the Red Cross. Sports: After baseball and basketball at TOHS, played NCAA Division1 basketball for the US Air Force Academy, Colorado. After graduation, and while in training at Keesler AFB, MS, played AAU basketball during off-duty time and was selected to play with the All-Air Force team against the other service's All-star teams (we lost a close one to Army in the final championship game) in Virginia. Continued to play organized and recreational league basketball, volleyball, softball, tennis, and bowling until had to have total left knee replacement in September 2009. Replaced the right knee in April 2014. Now go for walks and swim (no more running allowed!); enjoy watching college basketball and football (go Air Force Falcons!), but also a Creighton Bluejay Basketball and Nebraska Cornhuskers Football fan. Career: Attended United States Air Force Academy (69-73); Commissioned as USAF officer (73). Received Top Secret+ security clearance and served 26 years in various duties and locations: Student Pilot at Columbus AFB, MS (73); Electronic Systems Training Student at Keesler AFB, MS (73-74); Radar and Electronic Systems Maintenance Officer at the 773rd Radar Squadron,...Expand for more
