Mike's Story

Life I was a nerd in high school. I was the sports encylopedia from 3rd grade at PS 13 in Elmhurst, through PS 139 and later Halsey JHS, FHHS and Hofstra College (now University). I just retired after 47 years as a sportswriter. I spent 12 years with the old Long Island Press and I am the author of 2 books (Getting into Pro Baseball and Pro Football's Greatest Teams) I forgot to mention I was editor of "Who"s Who in Baseball" in 1984 and 1985. The very first sportscard shop opened in the Albany Capital District was my "Grand Slam Cards" in Ballston Spa. Save those Mickey Mantle cards. School OK, so I didn't date at all. I hated Spanish class the most. I ran home to watch my New York Giants beat up on the Brooklyn Dodgers. But it was a real gas out there at FHHS. I didn't turn out that badly, you know. I did try out for the Rangers baseball team once but the coach and players had a lot of snickers. College It's your former sports editor of The Hofstra Chronicle. I think I hold the record for keeping that job 6 years. (Just kidding). But I was fortunate to...Expand for more
see a lot of great athletes (Brant Alyea, Terry Kosens, Denny D'Oca, Bobby Stowers and the legendary John Schmitt (whose name I used to misspell). The Flying Dutchmen gave us a lot of great thrills in football (Cement Bowl), basketball (with Butch vanBreda Kolff) and baseball and lacrosse. Workplace It's been 40 plus years since I began my career as a journalist. I covered sports for The Long Island Press, Albany Times-Union, Schenectady Gazette, Middletown Times-Herald Record and Troy Record. I am the author of 2 books. But what I'll always remember is asking the question in 1973 that led to Yogi Berra's answer "It ain't over til it's over." I never get credit for asking the question. I had the privilege of covering the Yankees, Mets, Rangers, Islanders (all 4 Cup winners), Devils, Knicks, Nets and Jets. It's been a blast! Military When JFK asked for help, I responded. I enlisted in the Army. I dropped out of college briefly in 1961 when the Berlin Wall went up. It was only a year before the Cuban Missile Crisis. But the Military refused me. I was 4-F.
