Michael's Story

After that memorable year of 1969 I went to IU Bloomington and majored in Biology, intending to be and oceanographer. Soon realized that I was getting sea sick every time on the open ocean, so that did not look hopeful. In my dorm, most of those on my floor were pre-med, so I decided to take basically the same classes and was surprised to be offered admittance to IU Medical School in the first round and was able to configure my senior year as freshman year in med school. I met my wife, Eileen Clancy (Ben Davis '69) at IU, but we were married after my first year of medical school. At the end of medical school, I decided to go into otolaryngology initially but in the last several months I became concerned about the mutilative cancer surgeries that were being done at that time. My roommate from college, Andy M, was in my class and he was in pathology which had an opening at the time. So I decided to go into pathology for a year and then probably apply for ophthalmology. However I got in pathology and discovered there was a new procedure popularized in Sweden called fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNA) that allowed a diagnosis about 85-90% of time by using very thin needles to suck out tiny samples that are made into smears on slides and microscopically characterized. I became a professor of pathology and started a new division (cytopathology) and became a national expert at FNA collection and diagnostic methods. I ran the cytopathology at IUMC from 1980-86 and started one of the first cytopathology fellowships that emphasized FNA (traditional cytopathology is mainly Pap smears). I left IUMC in 1986 after starting a private FNA clinic across from St. Vincent's. Over the last 22+ years that 4 person business has become a 200+ full service pathology laboratory with main location on Zionsville Road in Indy and a location in Collinsville, IL. For the last decade we have been active in international and national clinical trials as a specialty Anatomic Pathology service. My laboratory, DCL Medical Labs (started out as Diagnostic Cytology Laboratory, but as our testing became full service that was changed to DCL) also created a postgraduate educational institute (Midwest Institute of Medical Education) that was sold to the largest Continuing Medical Education (CME) group, the American Society of Clinical Pathology several years ago. In the time the lab was developed I did a lot of teaching in national ...Expand for more
workshops (200+ lectures) wroter several book chapters and develop software to run the informatics of the laboratory. I have become an expert in database development for Anatomic Pathology and FDA Clinical Trials. I have also been involved in unique diagnostic work related to clinical trials such that I serve on advisory panels for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and consult for multiple Pharmaceutical Companies (Lilly, Pfizer, Merck, GlaxoSmithKline, J&J, etc). We managed the global trials for the Gardisil HPV vaccine, the first vaccine ever to prevent a cancer. My involvement with computers and interest in education, documentaries and storytelling and music has led me to become adept at video production, animation and web-based educational methodologies (learning management systems, distributed learning, etc.). I hooked up again with the Geiman Brothers, Jim and Tom, who still had the WRAGS meeting and recording annually in the last few years. So I went to do music videos with Jim Geiman and the WRAGS (Tom Geiman '67, Doug Rosebrock '68, Neal Mcconochie '70) in Ladoga IN starting in 2004. I was encouraged to participate the first 2 years, but did not really work much at it with my guitar. However after the recording weekend just before Thanksgiving of 2005, Doug passed away of a heart attack at his daughter's house. So the WRAGS ceased and I was invited to be a band member. Thus began my journey back into music with Jim's inspiration. I am now doing some fairly good harmonica work and rhythm guitar...hoping to add some mandolin and steel guitar licks in the future. I hope to be able to "retire" in a couple years and work on creative things. Maybe an experimental movie, a music video or a comedic video. I also enjoy still imagery. I did teach photographic techniques in college and medical school. My daughter is a portrate photographer and has an equestrian degree. So we are planning to have a large studio at our home in Zionsville once she leaves Olin-Mills. Politically I am a libertarian and I am a practicing Skeptic. So I hope everyone does what they want as long as they don't tell me how to run my life. As far as I am concerned big government and radical/dogmatic beliefs are our biggest threats, regardless of the party or sect. A favorite quote "its not what you say, it is what you do" (from a song by Doc White in the Album "Smok'em if you got em" by Geiman Bros Records).
