Michael's Story
How to sum up 50+ years in a few paragraphs. Well, here goes...
After college, I got married in 1972 and lived in Evanston, Richton Park and Flossmoor. We have three sons...
Kevin, the oldest, after 8 years in the navy, a degree from Western Illinois and serving as chief of security for Amazon and Microsoft cloud facilities, is now head of security for CUNA Corporation in Madison, WI. He lives with his wife and my granddaughter, Madison, in Oconomowoc, WI.
Dana, is the director of orchestras for Vernon Hills HS as well as a conductor of one of the Chicago Youth Symphony orchestras. He lives with his wife in Highland Park, IL. Dana drives his dad crazy as his favorite pastime is climbing mountains in the Cascades. Dana and his wife, Heather, have a new baby (December, 2020), Julian.
Matt is finishing up his masters in psychology at Northern Illinois University while simultaneously working at a hospital in Woodstock, IL.
I recently married Diane Saul (class of ‘67). We have 2 Boston Terriers and 2 rescue cats. Keeps life interesting. We like it here but it is a bit of a brutal commute to downtown Chicago.
Now for the professional stuff...
I am very fortunate to have been able to pursue a career in music..

Northwestern University School of Music after the Rich Central days. During my junior year, I auditioned and won a percussion position with the Grant Park Symphony, a summer orchestra that currently performs at Millennium Park in downtown Chicago. In ‘73 I switched to the timpani position and after a total of 46 seasons, retired after the 2014 season.
I currently continue to serve as the Principal Percussionist with the Lyric Opera of Chicago Orchestra (since 1979) and also the Director of Percussion Studies at DePaul University (since 1975). Some of my more fun times were touring with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra to Japan (twice) and Europe numerous times.
I still find performing and teaching to be rewarding and enjoyable.
It has been a long time since I’ve heard from many (most) of my classmates from Rich Central. We all go about our lives and lose contact. I hope to hear from you so we can catch up.
An addenda…as of this spring (2021), I’ve retired from both the Lyric Opera of Chicago and DePaul University. Diane and I had a new ranch house built (downsizing) in McHenry, IL. to be centrally located between the boys and Diane’s sisters. We’re still unpacking but love our neighbors and the rhythm of the area.
