Michael's Story

Life Judy, my wife of 33 years, and I travel as much as we can. So far our passports say Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Italy, England, Scotland, Ireland, France and Taiwan. Best city, in my opinion, London, but we're also partial to Dublin, Ireland and Munich, Germany. The trip to Taiwan was business for me and vacation for Judy. During that trip I developed a fondness for the Chinese and their culture. Judy did a couple day trips to Taipei on her own. Her stories make me wish I was traveling with her instead of working in Hsin Chu. We have a son and a daughter. There names are Patrick and Erynn. There seems to be a small Irish influence in our lives at least as far as names are concerned. Patrick also graduated from Oregon State University with a degree in electrical engineering. He's working in Lawton, Oklahoma at a paper manufacturing company. Erynn graduated from the University of Oregon with a degree in art and graphics design. She works in the marketing department of the California Academy of Science in San Francisco. Judy is the Secretary of the Senate in the Oregon State legislature in Salem. Her job is demanding but extremely rewarding. She's looking forward to a life of public service after she retires. As for me, I don't see retirement in my future. I transitioned from chemistry to computers at Wah Chang. I currently direct the activities of several programmers. I love the work. Judy and I have one last project. We're building a new house in South Salem. I guess we didn't learn after the last one. Wis...Expand for more
h us luck. I know we'll need it. College Graduated 6/71 from Oregon State University with a BS in chemistry. Primary focus was analytical chemistry which I started practicing at Wah Chang in Albany, Oregon immediately after graduation. Did some post-bach work in analytical chemistry but run out of energy and money after a year. Spent a fair amount of time in the marching band under the direction of James Douglas. Swam on the OSU team in my freshman year. Discontinued when work out demands grew too great. Worst memory - a whole year of organic chemistry on MWF at 8 am. Best memory - traveling with the OSU marching band to San Francisco to play at an OSU - Stanford game on Saturday and a 49er's game on Sunday. I must admit we were all a little hung over during the 49er game. Lived in a fraternity for a year before my independence took over. After that I spent two years as a dormy. During my senior year I lived off campus. Final observation - the older we get the more focused we become in our studies. Sure wish I was as focused back then as I am now. Workplace I've been at Wah Chang off and on for over 30 years. During the off times I worked for Wafertech LLC in Vancouver, WA. I also did a brief bit as an Oracle consultant. I started as as an analytical chemist for Wah Chang in Albany, Oregon. Over time I realized that I preferred computers to test tubes. I've written databases in support of Waftertech and Wah Chang. Lately I've been writing web pages. What's in the future? Less coding and more more supervision.
