Michael's Story
I retired from BellSouth early in '06. The kids were all through with school, and we wanted to take some time to travel, and to build a house on our little place in Petal, and to do some serious duck hunting.
Before we could get the house started, though, an old friend asked me to help him with a project. We worked in Florida for a few days, and took a short trip to South Africa to look at some new technology, and wrote up a couple of reports. It was fun. I bought a little fishing boat with my "consulting" pay, and went back to Petal.
A few weeks later he called again, and I started helping out more often. In late 2007, I came down here to Miami to work full time for a few weeks.
That was a two (NOW THREE) years ago. We've been living here in South Beach ever since. The retirement home is on hold, and I'm not hunting as much as I had planned. Instead Diane is walking on the beach every morning and painting sunsets; I'm fishing once in a while and shooting trap (clay pigeons) instead ...Expand for more
of ducks. I travel on business a few days every month. We try to find a good new restaurant every week..
Update 2020:
Diane was. diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2011. We left Miami and returned to Atlanta, where I cared for her until late 2015, when she entered a memory care unit. She is still there, although much of her has been taken away by this terrible disease.
With an old friend of ours who also had ended up alone, I bought a little house on the Chickahominy River near Williamsburg, Virginia. We moved here a couple years ago, and I spend most of my days working on the old house, or the yard, or tinkering in my shop. I fish and kayak on the river, take a motorcycle trip or two every year, visit with the kids (all four are married with children of their own) and hunt ducks every once in a while.
Update 2023
Diane passed away last year, at the end of February. My friend and I are still in the little house on the river, and I still take a long motorcycle trip every year.
