Michael James's Story
Life
Went to UCLA to get a doctorate, but got a record deal instead. Adopted the professional name Michael James. Travelled lots. Became a record producer and bicycle racer in the '80s, and continue to do both. Happily married since '91. Hobbies are hiking, spiritual pursuits and old movies. Vegetarian, but not militant about it. Founded Alternator Records LLC and Fresh Baked Music LLC. Have many fond memories of high school friends. Thanks for the fun. Live long and prosper!
Workplace
Michael James signed his first record deal as an artist at age 19 while attending UCLA on a full scholarship as a Third World Development studies major. By 21, he had a KROQ hit, and by 26, produced the first hit for Irving Azoff's then-fledgling Giant (Warner) Records.

on Heat and Courtney Love's band, Hole, ahead of his competitors and developing the acts into viable artists who have sold millions of records throughout their careers. As such, WEA founder and record business legend Jac Holzman signed MJ to Warner Music Discovery as a staff producer and A&R executive. Holzman encouraged James to start a new label/production company, Alternator Records, which immediately played a strong role in the development of MCA Records' multi-platinum act, New Radicals. A decade later, MJ still owns and helms the company, which has worked with top international acts ranging from jazz/blues-icon Robben Ford to venerable rock-stars Chicago. He recently founded Fresh Baked Music. James' unique perspective on the business of music has him in demand with artists, labels and conferences as a producer, consultant and guest lecturer.
