Michael's Story

Educational background includes a bachelor in mathematics from the University of the District of Columbia and a Master in mathematics from Howard University. He has over 25 years of experience in the communications, information systems, and aviation fields. He is currently a member of the MITRE Corporation Center for Advanced Aviation System Development systems engineering staff. Jenkins was involved in research and development for the FAA's next generation air traffic control network. His responsibilities were across several program areas and include leading studies that support the evolution of the National Airspace System from a ground-based system of air traffic control to a satellite-based system of air traffic management. This evolution is vital to meeting future air traffic demand, and to avoiding gridlock in the sky and at our nations airports. In addition, Jenkins has served as principle investigator for integrated voice and data communications for air traffic applications, lead the development of the FAA Telecommunications Infrastructure Network Management and Operations Concept of Operations, and task leader for the Voice Switching and Control System emergency bypass project. Prior to joining MITRE, Jenkins was a member of the technical staff of AT&T Bell Laboratories Digital Transmission Labo...Expand for more
ratory system engineering group. His responsibilities included system planning and engineering for the next generation of AT&T digital transmission products. He also worked for Texaco, where he was instrumental in software design and development in oil and gas exploration and production areas. Jenkins has published papers exploring different aspects of integrated voice and data communications for air traffic service applications, digital communications technologies, and next generation technologies that will allow more aircraft to safely fly closer together on more direct routes and reducing delays. In addition to his professional responsibilities, he has also served as an adjunct math instructor at Montgomery College and Howard Community College in Maryland and the University of the District of Columbia. Jenkins has been active in community outreach since his undergraduate days in Washington. He has served as president of the Metropolitan Consortium for Minorities in Engineering (METCON), and served as a math and science liaison for MITRE's Outreach Program with Hart Middle School. Other activities included serving as an AT&T visiting mathematics professor at Florida Memorial College, Morris College, and Paul Quinn College, all in support of the National Urban Leagues Black Executive Exchange Program.
