Michael L.'s Story

Life The short version of my life after high school goes like this: I graduated from the U of MN with a BS in public health. But changed my mind and went to law school in Philadelphia to get a paralegal degree. I worked in the trust dept of a bank in IL for a year but (snooze) needed something more exciting. Skipping forward I got married to a great gal from Mankato in 1980 and in 1982 went to work for an insurance company in St Paul as a paralegal in claims, then transfered with them to the Chicago area in 1985, working in many different claim positions, eventually as litigation specialist and litigation manager. Life was cool, 3 kids ( 1 daughter and 2 sons) a new house in the burbs, my favorite car , a Lincoln. Both the car and he house were the same color, dark grey with black roof (which my friends thought was funny). But in 1998 and forward, life took it's toll on me. From 1998 thru 2000 I had one serious medical problem after another ( heart attack, stroke, and kidney probs). Finally in 2000 I had to take a disability retirement after open heart surgery. The stress of all of this caused my wife and I to separate and divorce in 2000. She and the kids moved back to Mankato then, but I stayed in IL until 2005. I now live in Eden Prairie, keeping myself active by belonging to a variety of social groups. Someimes I ...Expand for more
take classes at a local college such as cooking or spanish language, both loves of mine. I also love to help out at our family farm in the spring and fall. Even though my life hasn't turned out out exactly as I had foreseen, It is still a great life, the positives much outweigh the negatives. Here is something that I think is both humorous and something I am proud of. I still have my high school Letterman's jacket, and it still fits like it did 30+ years ago - no I don't wear it out and about, even though I am tempted to sometimes. It is great to belong to this site. I hope to connect with those of you who also belong here. Call me nostalgic, but I do like and miss all of my classmates and my friends of other classes. Please let me know what is happening in your life. Now that I am a gold member, I can actually answer e-mails here. One final thing I'd like to pass on to all of you. I spent the 3 days in Lake Crystal last 10/08 . Our old elementry/high school complex was being demolished. The 1926 building became a pile of rubble and hauled away. The 1953 building was soon to follow. A lot of memories being carted away, sad as that may be, those memories can not be taken away from any of us, they live on because of us. Our past will always be a part of us and leads us into the future. Cheers to all Mike Jones
