Michael's Story
Went to Ohio University, was drafted, went to Vietnam as a Combat medic, got Purple Heart. Came home continued my schooling at Ohio U , gradated. Got a Job at E. F. MacDonald travel Company, traveled the world. After leaving EFM, I got a contracting position at the Defense Supply Center ( DESC) in Kettering Ohio, living at my house in North Ridge. I was able to maneuver my job into a marketing position where I worked various defense department events throughout the US. In 1998, DESC got BRACed and my job moved to Columbus with the now DLA Land & Maritime Center. I built a 2700 sq ft home on 5 acres 23 miles from work. I continued my Marketing activities, and was able to spend 6 months in Germany & 6 months in Korea as a Logistics Officer. In 2003 I was offered a Managerial position at DLA Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. I volunteered to spend 6 months in Afghanistan. 7 days before I was to deploy a lady rear ended me while I was riding my Moped & snapped my right ankle. The Army fronds upon sending someone on crutches so I didnât go. I healed up and applied again and was accepted for the Operations Officer in Kuwait, I passed all my physical requirements and was approved by the Navy Doctor &...Expand for more
my personnel physician. 2 weeks before deployment the Army again refused to send me. They have never indicated why, possibly age related. This would have been my last âgreat adventureâ.. ï My position in Hawaii has allowed me to travel frequently to Korea, Japan, Okinawa and Guam. I pretty much have checked the boxes on those countries and have no great desire to return. I did get to do a China trip, would repeat that one.
My government road is winding down and I will retire next year. I never got married & no kids.. so Iâm pretty much a free agent.
I live on a 43 foot sloop at the Ala Wai Harbor in Waikiki. Itâs pretty lived in & it doesnât go out much, but I do get to go out with other fellow boaters.
When I retire I will make my residence in Ohio for a couple of years & sell the property. I bought a 26 ft motorhome & will do a bit of stateside travelling. I bought a home at Port Charlotte Florida about a mile from the water. I will sell my Hawaii boat & buy a new smaller one for Florida. Florida will be my permanent residence. I hope to be doing some extensive word travelling in the future years. (as long as my health stays good). Itâs been a great adventure â¦.
