Michael's Story
After graduating from East, I spent one year at Metro State split between interests in Philosophy and Science. I spent the next few years in various career pursuits, none of which mattered except as they contributed to breadth of experience. Eventually I became involved in the High Tech community that was rampant in the Springs and spent 9 years at Digital Equipment. I also married my high-school sweetheart, Sue, and had twins, a boy and girl. At lay-off time, I turned down an offer in Longmont and went back to school for a Comp-Sci degree. I parlayed that into a job with MCI in their hay-day where I completed my Masters.
As WorldCom took over MCI, I took a position managing an IT department for the National Science Foundationÿs US Antarctic Program. I traveled yearly to the International Antarctic Center in Christchurch, New Zealand and to Antarctica twice. The job was very interesting, but the USAP is a very difficult road to hoe. eeded a break.
I went back to the business world. For 4 years I was VP of IT division of a business intelligence company that caters to needs around health insurance, disability, and Workers Comp for large companies. I've gotten into the thick of data warehousing, data marts, and data mining. It was a good break, but I found myself looking once again. In the final analysis, I find all the insurance related stuff to be transient and trivial when compared scientific pursuits, or the real love of my life, my kids. I'm spent 8 years as the Head of IT contracted to NSF's Arctic Research Program. So, bi-polar, sort of.
Both kids have grown into fine, caring, open, intelligent, educated adults. Cameron has a PhD in Molecular Virology, did research at U of Fl on using viruses to combat cancer, and is now a Science liaison for an Italian medical research company Leanne earned a BS with Honors in Neuroscience and completed her doctorate at the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine. She is Head of the Veterinary Behavior Department at Ohio State.
