Michael's Story

It took five years to get my BS degree since I changed my major at the end of the first year and none of the courses I had taken that year applied to the new degree. I still do not know how I was able to work 40 hours a week and carry 18 hours each semester! The ink was barely dry on my diploma when the company I had been working for while going to college promoted me and moved me to the facility in Chicago. Madelyn (Smith) and I had stayed in touch and we were married in 1978. Unfortunately, I screwed up and she divorced me two years later. In 1981 I learned that the company that I had worked for the past ten years was grooming me for a position at their headquarters in Syracuse, New York. After having failed Madelyn and already suffering from being half way across the country from family in Southern California, I decided that I did not want to end up in Syracuse and turned in my resignation. I moved back to Southern California in February and was lucky to meet Patricia that October. My family wondered why I only seemed to fall in love with women whose last name was Smith. We had our first date before Thanksgiving, I proposed before Christmas and we were married the following June. That was 36 years ago and we are still celebrating our love. We started a retail store selling accessories and equipment for four wheel drive vehicles. After ten years, one of our employees made us an offer we could not refuse and we sold the business, whi...Expand for more
ch is still in operation! I had wanted to work for Disney since high school but my family did not think of that as being a good career choice. Well, once we sold our business I decided that I was old enough to make my own decisions and applied for a position at Disneyland. Working at the “Happiest place on earth” was an awesome experience! Even Y2K! When Patricia and I started talking about where we wanted to eventually retire, we discovered that neither of us wanted to remain in Southern California. Too expensive and way too many people! We planned a road trip to visit Colorado and liked what we saw when we reached the Pikes Peak region. I thought it would be a good idea to check out the housing market and the next thing I knew we were signing a contract to build our retirement home with an awesome view of America’s Mountain! I had never thought that I would not eventually retire from Disney. However, we felt that it made sense to move to Colorado while we were still young, get jobs and eventually retire in place. We put in our resignations, sold our house and moved to the Rockies. Because our house was still under construction, we spent 51 nights in an extended stay hotel. 9-11 happened while we were there. It was a little scary when we realized that we had no home, no jobs and the world was falling apart! Things eventually settled down. We moved into our new home, got jobs and have been enjoying Colorado (even the winter snow!).
