Armeda's Story

Life Alaska is still home after 42 yrs. Both of my kids are married & I have 2 grandsons (Dustin and Hawken) & 2 granddaughters (Dallas and Deborah). The two businesses are still up and running and the paperwork is still overpowering. Cantwell Lodge is open year around and with the help of my son's sawmill the main building and the Atco motel unit are both sided with Alaskan cottonwood. All of us are avid snow machiners. We still have a Piper Super Cub in the yard which son, Chris, now flys. Chris and my son-in-law, Mike, continue bear hunting up on the East Fork of the Chulitna River where our old home in the Bush is located. Janet does the office work at the Lodge four days a week and i take the other three days. Davida, my daughter-in-law, is at home in Sutton working. Anchorage is still 210 miles south & Fairbanks 150 north - thank goodness!!! Cantwell has tripled in size from 88 people in 1965 to about 265 residents. There are days when that's too many so riding or flying off into the mountains is great. I enjoy visiting relatives & friends in the "Lower 48" but I could never live out there again. I continue to sail with the Windjammer Barefoot Cruise line. It's a small company and their 3-masted and 4-masted sailing ships have nice small compliments of passengers. Over the past nine years I've met many new friends and have become close friends with a handful...Expand for more
of these people. My kids and I have been expanding our Cantwell Lodge facilities. The cabins are still in the building stage. The walls and floors of the first four cabins are on site. Each cabin will house up to 5 people. My daughter, Janet, runs the Lodge for me so I can get away once in a while. On November 8, 2005 I was elected to our Denali Borough assembly. This is also a full time job. I fly into Juneau at least twice a year for training and politics. Another year is in blossom. Our weather keeps us around two weeks later than most of the rest of Alaska but most of our snow is gone or going fast. The mountains are still white. The studded snow tires are still on the pick up and car. I'll start changing them over to the summer tires in about two weeks. The grandkids keep growing. Dustin is a senior this year and Hawken is a sophomore. Dallas is in the 7th grade and Debbie is in the 5th. Chris is helping to mobilize component buildings for remote sites. Mike is working on the North Slope. Davida still works at the Colony Kitchen in Palmer and Janet runs the Lodge with an iron fist and a soft heart. Mike, Janet, Debbie and I are hoping to take my boat (21' Bayliner) to Whittier, AK on May 6th. It is a much closer run for us than Seward and Homer. I will be attending the reunion in October. So I am looking forward to a great visit with everyone.
