Michael's Story

Hello my fellow Columbia HS Blue Devils and St. Ambrosians (is that even a word??...if not...it is now!!:) I sincerely hope and pray that the days, months, and years since we graduated have been relatively serene and filled with an abundance of "life gifts." For the times we all hit our respective bumps in the road...perhaps fell into a few metaphoric potholes...struggled to get out...wondered if it was possible to find another happy day...we did/you did! We are here to tell our stories so many years down the road. I am blessed to be sharing this message with you. I was very excited to discover this site. I had no idea how to seek out faces/names from the past. I knew you had to be out here...somewhere. I just wasn't sure how to find you. So...hello! The past 37 years have been a blessing and challenging at the same time! I have lived, loved, laughed, cried, and scratched my head over the sheer profoundness of what my tears and laughter meant over the years. I lost both of my parents yet brought two new amazing and miraculous boys into this world we share. I am divorced, yet, am an amazing father to my sons. They are my lineage...my immortality. Ian and Aidan Maloney have been my greatest teachers. After I graduated from CHS, I went on to HVCC and graduated with a AAS in Human Services. I enlisted in the military not long after that. Basic Training was at Fort Dix, New Jersey and my AIT was at Fort Sam Hounston in San Antonio, Tx. I worked as a Behavioral Science Specialist. My first duty station was Walter Reed Army Medical Center. While living in the greater Washington DC area at that time, I graduated from U. Maryland with an undergraduate degree in Social Work. My military job and college education were a fantastic fit. I came down on orders during Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm. I was part of a Combat Psychiatric Triage team. I served for 12 months in Seoul, South Korea with temporary duty assignments in Okinawa, Japan. My last 3 years were with the 24th Mechanized INF Div out of Fort Stewart, GA. I hated it there!! It was time for me to go home. I was in for about 10 years 9 months. I lived a bit of a nomadic existence. After growing up in NY, I wanted to see our country and the world. I planted roots in Colorado, Arizona, Georgia, Maryland, Pennsylvania and now Florida. I have traveled through/visited 41 out of our 50 states. I have traveled overseas to Scotland, Greece, Turkey, Japan, England and Ireland. I've visited the US and British Virgin Islands. I have traveled by way of commercial airplane, military airplane, bus, train, aut...Expand for more
omobile, cruise ship, a ginormous 5 masted sail boat, gas powered/electric scooter, bicycle, cab, rickshaw, donkey, horse, sky car/sky rail, skis, hiking, combat boots, ambulance and US Army helicopter. Getting from point A to point B throughout my life has been quite the adventure! I worked as an addictions/trauma therapist for about 30 years and got "a little crispy around the mental edges"...in part...because I was very good at my job. I changed careers...worked as a physician recruiter for about 5 years. Now, I am a permanently retired US Arm veteran. Life is so perfectly imperfect. I have learned over the years to be loyal, forgiving, and gentle with myself. I live in Palm Beach County, FL. Palm trees and mangrove forests are in abundance.. I live 5 miles from the Atlantic Ocean...I am talking about that amazing azure blue colored water. I have always been a Jimmy Buffett fan. Living in a tropical paradise...minus the hurricanes...brings Jimmy Buffett's song writing that much near and dear to my heart. Life is good in South East Florida. HOWEVER...I yearn for the change of seasons. I miss the snow (for a few minutes) especially around Christmas time. I painfully miss the fall and spring months of the Northeast. A little about the loves of my life. My oldest son Ian is a gifted musician who is studying courses relative to becoming an EMT in Colorado! My youngest son Aidan was offered to play baseball for a D-2 college in Central Florida come the fall of 2020. They are fine young men. Respectful and respectable. Honorable and noble. I could not be more proud! In closing, it is worth mentioning...I have lived, laughed, loved, cried. I have scratched my head more times then I'm able to remember over how profound life has been...my journey. Jimmy Buffett wrote a song called: "He went to Paris." Have you ever heard of this song? Well...I am kind of like the guy Jimmy sings about. Let's just say I can relate to the journey. The very last verse goes like this: "Now he lives in the islands, fishes the pilin's, and drinks his green label each day. He's writing his memoirs and losing his hearing, but he don't care what most people say. Through eighty-six years of perpetual motion, if he likes you he'll smile then he'll say, Jimmy, some of it's magic, some of it's tragic, but I had a good life all the way." I pray that God holds you and your family members in the palm of His hand. I pray you find peace and serenity in times of turmoil, confusion, and pain. Take care Columbia HS Blue Devils and St. Ambrose alumni!!!!!! Michael (Mickey) Maloney
