Michael's Story

After my days at Mabelvale were over, my family moved to Memphis, Tennessee. I wasn't too thrilled with the idea, but I had planned all along to go to Memphis State University anyway. Unfortunately, in August 1967, my education was interrupted by being drafted into the Army despite my 2S deferment. That was probably the low point of my life. Fortunately, I did get back to the States in one piece. Enough of that... Since I did have the financial backing of the G.I. Bill (as meager as it was) and with no pressure to finish my degree as quickly as possible in order to begin working, I stayed at the University until I had completely drained every cent out of my benefits. By the time I graduated, I had pretty much worn out the School of Arts and Sciences in vertebrate zoology, chemistry, microbiology and physics. My first 'serious job' was doing benchwork at DuPont Chemical Company that included research on polymerization inhibitors. I was then offered a position in R & D at Coyne Cylinder Company doing work on acetylene cylinder prototypes towards patentable ends. Coyne decided to pick up and move to Huntsville, Alabama and I was asked to design and set up a new Research Lab, but after taking a trip to the site, I decided that Alabama was not for me. About that time, two major things happened to me. I married Mary Ann Costello who had just graduated from UT, Knoxville and I was offered a position with Tyson Foods in Berryville, Arkansas. Mary Ann was in total favor of moving to Arkansas, so that worked out. I had fun with Tyson's, managing a staff of technicians and being given enough research projects on the side to keep me interested. After a year or so, Mary Ann got antsy and decided to go to Law School at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. Mary Ann's only brother was kille...Expand for more
d in an auto accident in 1981 and she felt a need to go back to Memphis to oversee her parents' two jewelry stores. By this time she had gotten out of Law School and had passed the Bar Exam. I checked out the employment possibilities in the Memphis area and quickly got a job as Plant Chemist with Schlitz Brewing Company. At last I had found my true calling! Over the years, the Plant was bought out by first, Stroh's and then in 1990 by Coors. I definitely enjoyed working in the beer industry and, although I retired at the age of 58, I consider myself on permanent vacation. We continue to live in Memphis, but we have some property in Mississippi that has a nice little twenty-eight acre lake in the middle of it. We have a Lakehouse overlooking the lake and a guesthouse that was built over the lake. Since the property is less than an hour away from Memphis, we spend almost every weekend and holiday there. Our plan is to move there permanently when Mary Ann decides to retire. Early in our marriage, we came to the conclusion that becoming parents was probably not a good idea. Mary Ann said that I would probably just perform scientific experiments with them anyway! In place of kids, we've had 'furry children' - German Shepherds and one goofy retired Greyhound. Since we did have the opportunities, we have done quite a bit of traveling over the last three decades, primarily in the U.K. Scotland is our favorite place and would probably be our choice for where to retire if the fishing wasn't so good at our lake! In the Fall, you can probably find us at most of the University of Tennessee football games. When we were younger, we usually found the time to go skiing in Colorado. I'm afraid my knees can't take the pressure anymore though. You can contact me at mccarty2007 at bellsouth.net.
