Michael's Story
Life
Following FHHS, I commuted to the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn (now Polytechnic University) for four years, with 26 stops each way on the subway. While working at Bell Labs in New Jersey, I received an MS from University of Pennsylvania and PhD back at Brooklyn Poly.
From there it was off to the Washington, DC area, initially with the Institute for Defense Analyses--a 'think tank' for the Office of the Secretary of Defense. Then, it was nearly eight years in the Federal Government, culminating as Assistance Commissioner at the General Services Administration. In 1977, I left to join a small network design and implementation firm. After we were acquired by CONTEL, responsibilities grew to running all of its government business, with 1,400 people around the globe. dealing with software and networking technologies as well as a few 'dot-coms'.
After college, I married Judith Feldman (FHHS-1959). She is now the Associate Superintendent of Schools of Montgomery County, Maryland. With roughly 130,000 students, Judie is responsible for all curriculum and instruction for all grades (Head Start through High School, Math through Phys. Ed.). We have three children. Amy lives in Manhattan and is VP of 'Toys R Us'. Josh also lives in 'the city' and is an investment banker with 'CIBC Oppenheimer'. Paul is in New Orleans and is Assistant Professor of Epidemiology at Tulane University.
Working and family are certainly important. But my passion is collecting, with a focus on snow domes-- those 'cheesy' plastic things you see at airports. Most are souvenirs from tourist sites, but I have several hundred that advertise products, companies, movies and TV shows. I've been told it is likely the world's largest collection, with more than 6,000 different ones.
