Michael's Story

When I was at Kalani, graduating with my peers was not guaranteed. In fact, I nearly failed my junior year (1967-1968). However, I was offered a second chance, and did in fact walk with my class on 8 JUN 1969. Our class song, "The Impossible Dream", was most approprriate for me, as I accomplished things later in life I thought not possible on that day. For one, I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Zoology from the University of Hawaii. I earned a 3.8 GPA in my major, and aced classes like Calculus II and Astrophysics. In 1977 I was successful in applying for Coast Guard Officer Candidate School. I served for 22 years, retiring as a Commander (O-5). While in the Coast Guard I served on two ships, I was the Navigator on my first ship, and became proficient in celestial navigation - using celestial bodies such as the sun and stars to establish the ship's position. I was also Diving Officer on both ships, and actually conducted dives in the polar regions. We dove in both the Bering Sea up north and the Weddel Sea in Antarctica, where water temperatures averaged 28 degrees fahrenheit (yes, that's below freezing for fresh water!!). I visited many foreign countries, and made it through 47 of the 50 US states. I also earned a Master of Science degree from the Naval Postgraduate School; this included writing and presenting a thesis. I...Expand for more
am now completely retired. When I wake up each morning, I have the luxury of deciding whether to take my bow and arrows to the archery range, my guns to the gun range, or my rod and reel to one of the nearby bodies of water to fish. When I want to relax, I might listen to smooth jazz, classical, or Hawaiian music; if I want to get energized, I'll listen to classic rock. Plans for the near future - prepare for the 2017 Honolulu Marathon. I've completed four marathons, all of them the Honolulu Marathon. The last was 1987, so it has been a while. A challenge to any Kalani High School Class of 1969 grads reading this - come join me on 10 DEC 2017 at the Honolulu Marathon! Late Entry: Didn't get to the 2017 Honolulu Marathon due to health issues. These issues have been resolved so I have submitted my entry fee for the 2018 Honolulu Marathon. Completing the 2018 Marathon is most fitting, as it will be 40 years ago that I ran in my first Marathon. So come on fellow Class of '69ers, join me 09 DEC 2018 as we self-propel ourselves 26 miles 385 yards and earn that most coveted finisher's t-shirt! Even later entry (06 DEC 2019) I did complete the 2018 Honolulu Marathon - slow, but I finished! How many others from the Class of 1969 can claim this? Don't know at this point how many more marathons I'm going to be in, but never say "Never"!
