Michael's Story

I am currently living in Arlington, Virginia, and working as a defense analyst for a government contracting defense firm. I provide knowledge and background on a variety of domestic and international policy trends. My experience includes analysis, research, and writing on a variety of policy issues ranging from organization structures within the cooperative threat reduction and arms control arena to international terrorism and implications for both homeland security and national defense. I have interfaced directly with a variety of stakeholders in departments and agencies throughout the defense and homeland security sectors in U.S. Government (including time spent working on-site at the Department of Homeland Security's headquarters here in Washington), and I have an extensive wealth of knowledge and contacts within government regarding capabilities and responsibilities for Combating WMD (CWMD). My work and analysis on nonproliferation and nuclear threat reduction has been featured in a number of policy publications and reports within the non-governmental sector -- in addition to a number of government reports and studies stemming directly from my work with the Tauri Group ¿ and is continually sought for a number of issues related to developments within the nonproliferation and arms control policy worlds. In my "spare" time, I am a graduate student at Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service (hoya saxa!!!), pursuing a master's degree in Security Studies (with a concentration on Nonproliferation and Unconventional Weapons and some work in intelligence as well). After being accepted to Master's programs at the London School of Economics, the George Washington University's Elliott School of International Affairs, and Georgetown, Georgetown offered me a very well-paid fellowship that made my decision process easy. Since beginning my studies at Georgetown, my program and the School of Foreign Service have both been ranked as the best in the country by a number of foreign policy academic journals and peers in the international relations community). To say the least, I love my program and I love the faculty I work with. It's not every day that I get to attend classes with former ambassadors, take field trips to battle fields with former generals, and or learn from individuals who worked on the front lines of major international events and agendas. Additionally, my time at Georgetown has helped accelerate my exposure and credentials in ways...Expand for more
which I couldn't have imagined anywhere else. I have been approached by a number of different intelligence agencies and others with various opportunities for scholarly and professional advancement, and have had the chance to challenge and engage leaders on modern day issues. Needless to say, I'm living the dream. Getting my master's degree from Georgetown -- in addition to living and working in D.C. for over 5 years now -- really reaffirms my love for life on the East Coast, and all of the many opportunities I have here that I never have experienced before. Aside from work and school, I am engaged to the love of my life and the woman whom God has brought me in His never-ending show of grace, love, provision, and blessing. She is a former congressional staffer on Capitol Hill, and presently works for the American Studies Program, where she spent a semester studying in Washington nearly 2 years after I completed my studies there during the senior year of my undergraduate career. We are set to be married on May 23, 2009, in Washington, D.C., with a reception to follow on Capitol Hill. We will honeymoon in the Western Caribbean on a 7 day cruise (with ports of call in 4 different countries), and then settle in a home in northern Virginia. We plan on adopting a cat not longer after we are married, and will start a family in the near-er term. Though we have no immediate plans to leave the Washington area, we are open to a number of possible opportunities elsewhere in the United States and abroad. The world is our playground, and we intend to play on all of the equipment as much as we can. We share a love of life and adventure together, and look forward to all of the many opportunities, experiences, and challenges ahead. More than anything though, we love each other deeply... and though I thought I knew true love before, Lindsey has shown me the never-ending depths of what is possible. Since high school and college, life has been filled with many different challenges, heartaches, blessings, and trials... but each and every one of them have been something that I have grown from and have been richly blessed by. Everything -- good, bad, ugly, and otherwise -- has been something I hold onto and will never forget, and something I will someday pass along to my own children and grandchildren as I encourage them to pursue their dreams and passions and callings... in just the same way I've been encouraged and given the opportunities to pursue my own.
