Mike did very little writing in 1962 ... but now lives for it. I think High School was a lot of fun ... I never skipped a day of school, not even for one hour.
ON GIRL FRIENDS & FASHIONS = Late in the 1950's~to early 60's ~ the boys all noticed that Poodle skirts had VANISHED ~ turned into short MICRO-Mini's, legs everywhere! Wow. And the Drive-In Movies (pronounced "PASSION-PITS") (where we could kiss thru an entire double feature), were everywhere~ like "Flying Cloud" on Hwy 169, and the "SEVEN-HI" on 101. It was beyond wonderful. It was "American Graffiti" only better, because it was REAL LIFE, no dream !!!
In High School I was an average student, but in Shop I was Super, and I built a HOT ROD, like the yellow DUCE COUPE in the movie, "American Graffiti", but painted green in color. In my MODEL "A" FORD COUPE I installed a hand built, FULL-RACE CORVETTE engine, with SIX CARBS, and they ALL WORKED. It would go 100mph in SECOND GEAR, and it had THREE GEARS~ go figure !!! My MODEL "A" could beat the Chevy 409. Not bad for an 18 year old, self taught mechanic.
In '62 I attended DUNWOODY Industrial Institute (now ...Expand for more
called DII), by working at MacDonalds 2 years, for $1/hour~ which sounds low~ but a Union job then was $3.50 full-time. Upon Graduation I worked as a LITHOGRAPHER / PRINTER / LINOTYPE MACHINIST for many years. I earned enough money to move out to "DUNWOODY" AVENUE (Casco Point) on Lake MINNETONKA. So I went from "Dunwoody to Dunwoody", but only because of the fine education Dunwoody Institute offered me (for $35 a month).
1982~ I married LYNN MARIE KNIGHT, my High School Sweetheart. The first day I saw Lynn & her mother, Dorothy, walking home from Desnick Drug (accross from BEEKS Pizza) I said to myself~ "That is the girl I'm going to marry. True Story, Love at First Sight, No Lie. Lynn used to drive my Model "A" but she did not "punch-it.'
1990~ I became a "Nerd" (after 5 years) in COMPUTER SCHOOL at Hennepin Technical Colleges (EP & BP) in both Computer Graphic Arts (Ralph Schedmkie) & Television Production (Richard Oxly) both Extra Fine Teachers.
1995~ Lynn & I started WEGO~TV, "The ELECTRONIC FREE PRESS", where "ALL NEWS FITS" ... Our print shop's first equipment= a MAC-SE, an Addressograph 8500, & a CHIEF-20A Offset Press ~ all stuffed into our "GARAGE" !!! Funny how tech companies somehow start in garages...
Darling Lynn Marie passed away on September 1, 2005. All I can say to married couples, about loosing a mate is ~ the first 5 years go "OK" ~ with lots of tears. However, then other real memories start to come back, mainly the ones that you thought you forgot.
2011 has been a huge career change year for me, the change to going from "printing the news" (as a lithographer), to "writing the news" for television, as a journalist. Wow.
"Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country". This is a saying of fellow Linotypers of old, they all used to practice with ... because you hit every key on the keyboard ... to build up your speed. Which is interesting ... because the Liontype machine itself ... would only go 6 lines per minute .... 30 picas long. Of course, if you were punching paper tape ... you could go 90 wpm ... if you were good ... then the tape would run the Linotype without you. Those were the days ...
More Soon, Mike
