Michael's Story
Life
For the past 25 years I've been living out on Whidbey Island in Washington state with my wife Susan C. Prescott. I earned a B.A. in anthropology from Michigan State, and later an M.A. in Slavic linguistics and a Ph.D. in Slavic languages and literature from the University of Washington. I work as an examiner for an international educational organization called International Baccalaureate, teach and write, all part-time, and I am an organic farmer/gardener and avid hiker in the mountains out here. s is a two story solar-powered yurt out in a remote part of our county. We closed down the road years ago, and it requires about a half mile hike for visitors. I suppose our lifestyle might best be described as voluntary simplicity. We earn about $10,000 a year combined income and spend a lot of time volunteering in our community. My old high school friend and classmate, Walt Sowa, who works as a prosecuting attorney over on the mainland, comes out every so often to visit us with his two great teenage kids, Gabe and Molly.
