Michael's Story
Life
I left Colorado Springs in December of 1983 to join the Navy where I spent ten years then spent the next thirteen years as a police officer in southern California. I got married in August of 2000 and had a beautiful baby girl in October of 2004.
I got tired of living payday to payday to make a mortgage payment in San Diego and made a family decision to return to my home town. I wanted a better life and education for my daughter and I knew my wife would love it here.
We sold our house in San Diego and moved to Colorado Springs in July of 2005. We recently moved in to a brand new house that we built in the Stetson Hills area.
College
I've been working on my four year Bachelor Degree for about 22 years now. I have enough credit hours for two degrees but still need just two general classes to finish my BA in Workforce Education and Development from Southern Illinois University.
Workplace
I left Colorado Springs in December 1983 to join the Navy where I spent 10 years of my life. While still on active duty, I put myself through the San Diego Reserve Police Academy and was hired as a volunteer police officer by the Coronado Police Department in southern California. When I got out of the Navy, Coronado PD hired me full time and put me through the San Diego Regional Police Academy. I worked as a police officer in Coronado for about four years then I lateralled up the coast to the Carlsbad Police Department where I...Expand for more
worked for about eight years. During that eight years, I spent six of them on a police motorcycle as a Traffic Enforcement Officer and Collision Investigator. I always felt guilty accepting a paycheck for riding a motorcycle in a beach community but someone had to do it!
As soon as I relocated back to Colorado Springs, I applied at the El Paso County Sheriff's Office and was hired as a lateral. I completed the Sheriff's Academy and finished as the top Academic Achiever out of 32 recruits. I guess the 13 years experience as police officer in California came in handy! I'm currently in the Intake and Release Section at the Criminal Justice Center. I hope I don't reunite with any of you there!
I am also working as a motorcycle instructor at the Motorcycle Training Academy at the Chapel Hills Mall. I achieved my Motorcycle Safety Foundation Certification and teach most weekends. Please stop by and say hello sometime.
Military
I had a very successful 10 years in the Navy. Other than schooling, I spent all of my tours of duty in San Diego. I made the most out of the time I was in and was named Sailor of the Year for Destroyer Squadron 5 and Pacific Fleet Sailor of the Year Runner-Up. I made two deployments, one of them was a Round-the-World cruise. I saw alot of things during my sea duty and have fond memories of my service time. I got out at the ten year mark because I was headed for a career in Law Enforcement.
