Michael's Story

Workplace As the head of the Academic Computing Services Microcomputer Support activities at U.C.S.D. Mike is responsible for the "care and feeding" of about 500 Macintoshes and over 800 PC's, keeping microcomputers available for instruction. These student workstations run MacOS 9, Macos X, or Windows XP. Mike is additionally the manager of Academic Computing Services Software Distribution where he WAS the department for many years. An additional department he manages is the Camus wide Desktop support called ACS/Desktpop Support. Desktop Support provide hired help to the UCSD campus community at cost. Mike also currently serves as the UCSD campus representative in the monthly TAS meetings, and throughout the year, coordinating UCSD involvement in Strategic Sourcing purchases in the IT field. Mike came to UCSD after 12 years at KPBS FM and KPBS TV where he was an audio engineer / Mixer / broadcast engineer / announcer and almost anything else. He recorded Albums and live concerts as well as engineering live events coverage from Auctions to plane crashes to many years of the San Diego Folk and La Jolla Jazz Festivals, to the San Diego Symphony, Opera and Hoiday bowl coverage. His recordings of The Opera were heard world wide. He has received both local and national awards such as an Emmy for his work on a TV program on Gershwin. Many of the Documentary programs he was either audio engineer or video engineer are regular repeats on KPBS. Mike designed and built custom electronics including high end audio distribution systems, retrofit electronics into existing audio consoles, remote status and control systems as well as pulling miles of cables. He was the first voice on the KPBS Radio Reading Service, (A subcarrier service for the print handicapped providing newspaper reading, and books 24 hours a day with special recievers). All the faciliites he installed were designed with full handicapped access in mind. Working closely with wheelchair bound and/or blind professionals provided an enjoyable part of his professional growth. His support of or coverage of special olympics, meetings of committees on the disabled, and more help raise public awareness of handicapped issues. Mike's last professional broadcast work was audio for the MTV broadcast from the superbowl here in San Diego. Mike was also Chief Engineer (CE), On air personality (announcer), field broadcast mixer and more for KCR, the SDSU student run radio station now online on the San Diego cable systems, and internet at kcrlive.com. During the time Mike was CE, he added the Cox and Southwestern cable broadcasts that supplement the local to SDSU Carrier current broadcasts. He also designed and built custom distribution electronics for this non-conventional broadcast operation. Later he served a couple of years at SDSU's College of Arts and Letters working out of the Language Lab and later adding The Social Sciences Research Lab. While at SDSU he learned VMS on a VAX and honed his PC support and computer networking skills, as well as a first exposure to Macintosh. Additional areas he was responsible for were audio and video distribution, video and audio tape maintenance and repair, as well as minor electronic design and repair. Mike was part of two location recording companies in San Diego. Audio Odyssey was the longest lived of these, and provided custom album production, remote recording services, remote live broadcast support for stations that needed facilities as well as studio work.
