Michael's Story
Real quick story of my life: If can be done ass backwards, I've done it. Seriously - its just about the truth.
Joined Army Reserves right after graduation. Went to basic training the day we started Desert Shield (aka Gulf War I). By time I was done with basic and my advanced training all that crap was over. Wanted to be helo pilot but found out that I couldn't see colors (who knew!) so I opted to become a systems analyst.
While in the reserves I moved up the ranks to Sgt and working in real time battle simulations (all that crap you play on your XBOX/PS3 now has nothing on what we had back then). I kept my self busy at day job of doing computer stuff on my own/self employed. I realized that the Army wasn't for me and when my time was up, I was outta there. Did some studying at DVC but nothing too exciting. I was never that interested in academics since they don't care if you learn only that you show up every day and have a heart beat.
I was ready to get a real job and had a buddy setup a job with UPS to sort packages. It payed fine and thought what the hell. Night before I was to go to the interview I get a call from an old Sgt from Army who was out of the service and working at Sun Microsystems and wanted to know if I was willing to come down for a few weeks to work on a small project. Man...I really didn't want to blow the UPS job but this seemed like a short project and should only take a couple weeks. UPS co...Expand for more
uld wait.
Started as a contractor at Sun doing some web stuff when the web was still new. Two weeks turned into a month. A month turned into six and eventually they learned that I was a pretty good programmer and offered me a full time job. That was 11 years ago. Still working for them as senior staff software engineer. Really smart folks to work with and hey, it pays the bills.
Moved to Fremont to get closer to work and bought crap little house. Then the girlfriend moves in and before you know it we have a kid on the way. That's how life's gone. We're married now and have two other kids (2 girls 1 boy) and life is way more crazy than I could have ever imagined.
I still keep in touch with some of the gang from Pitt but I rarely go that way any more. Family has left that area and I only go that way once in a blue moon.
Swimming was my life in school and for the most part it kept me out of trouble. I've started back up and can pretty much hold my own with the young kids ;) I just can't do the three times a day workouts any more. A few times a week is good enough.
That's the quick version. Of course there's a lot more in the details but I only have 20k characters and need to leave out some juicy details so you'll contact me directly or you can see me more of my life on myspace and look me up via my email - stoops at mac dot com (have to spell it all out b/c classmates won't let you post email or url addresses!)
