Michael's Story

Life We've all moved on. And I look back to a day in 1975 when everything I owned could be packed into, or tied with bungee cords onto my 1969 Volkswagen Beetle. At the end of that year's winter I left for Colorado from Long Beach. I stopped to say good bye to my parents in San Bernardino. And my pensive mother handed me a large sack of sandwiches for the trip. In Kingman, Arizona I discovered that instead of letuce in the sandwiches, she had substituted a few $20 bills. I felt very rich. Weeks later, sitting in a small two-room apartment in Denver, I felt very alone. Friendships came with time, leftward leaning politics and a job. My wife had made a similar journey to Denver from upstate New York via Fort Worth, Texas. We met while she was a graduate student at the University of Denver. We were married the day after I turned thirty. Patty is Irish. She comes from a large extended and animated family. I, on the other hand, was raised with less knowledge of heritage and distant relations (each seemed to have scatterd to the winds). My familial dynamics were subdued. We both viewed each other's family as if they had come from a far away but interesting planet. As we grow older we seem to drift toward the once unfamiliar styles of our in-laws: Patty a little less the extravert, me a little less the introvert. We have two children, a boy and a girl, born eighteen months apart. Devin was born in 1980. Meghan was born in 1982. The high school they atended reminded me of San Bernardino High: an older two story public school built in the '20's, a diverse student population and wisecracking adolescents. I graduated from Valley College, Long Beach State, Metropolitan ...Expand for more
State College (here in Denver) and Regis University (also here in Denver). I've worked a while as a journalist (I was earnest but slow), but have spent most of my time working as a physical therapist (choosing the regular paycheck), in administration and as staff. I performed for a few years with an iprovisational comedy toupe called Denver Theatre Sports. Over the last seven years I've traveled to the Ecuadorian Andes, the headwaters of the Amazon, Siberia and West Africa to spend time with traditional peoples. For the last couple of years I've been able to put those experiences and the love of improvisational theater together in workshops that I and a partner in this venture call "Dream Portrayal Workshops". We facilitate the exploration and the meaning of dreams by acting them out (If you're interested in how this works, type dream portrayal into your search engine and our page will show up). Because of John Reganold's good nature, enthusiasm and energy, since 1987 I've had yearly reunions with him (Washington), Jed Zelman (Connecticut) and Jeff Cohen (California). Occasionally Bruce Diel has joined us. We've traveled everywhere from Idaho's Bitter Root Wilderness area to the Wine Country of Sonoma. I'm working full time and writing when I can. My most recent articles -- niche markets to be sure -- appear in "Shaman's Drum (Winter 2006) and "Dream Time" (Winter 2006). I have a short poem in "The Wazee Journal" (Fall/Winter 2007. In the spirit of those of us who have found themselves sitting at their computer, going to this web page and curious about those we have known in the past, I -- with fond memories of youthful friendships -- offer you my hello!

We dream of seen and unseen forces: the known, the disavowed and the unrepresented. Facing these forces in dreams recovers for us a world in which fear and illusion give way to the authenticity of personal power.

Sometimes the body calls more loudly than the mind to live exuberantly in the Spring. But whether a whisper or shout, it's all the same celebration. (Cherry Creek Time Trials 5-11)
