Michael's Story
Life
Well life since graduating in 1969 has been a long strange trip. First, four years of college, then 3 years of the army, Savannah, GA, and in Alaska, and since then, more than 30 years of firefighting, emergency medical work, 911 dispatching, and yes I even got to do some teaching. Of course the teaching was not what I went to Eastern Connecticut State College for, though. After graduating from Eastern, I went into the Army, and got into Fire/Rescue there. Needless to say,it was a far cry from History and teaching high school students. I really got into the work, and found I was good at it. After leaving the Army, in 1976, I got work at Electric Boat, for those of you that forgot, EB, Submarine builder for America. I was on the Fire Department there. Work at the Boat in the late 70's was interesting to say the least. I used my training like I never thought I would. Lots of odd incidents. It was not boring. However, I came on at the wrong time. In 1977, there was major layoff, and I was caught in the middle. I had moved from Willimantic to North Stonington by then, and now I was without a job. I got lucky, and landed a job at the Naval Submarine Base, in Groton. Again, I was at the Fire department. While living in the town of North Stonington, I was a member of the Volunteer fire department and the Ambulance corps., there. Also, I took a part-time job as a 911 dispatcher, in the Town of Groton. Also, while at the Subase, I started teaching fire figthing, and CPR. I have to admit, I never in my wildest dreams thought I would get back into teaching, but I did. In 1986, after being at the Subase for almost 9 years, I finally got the chance to get on a city department. I was hired at the City of Norwich. I've been there ever since. Along the way I got married, and now live in Putnam. Health-wise, I have survived cancer. My wi...Expand for more
fe and I enjoy antiques and antique shows, buying and selling. We have no children. I like to say I am my only child. We do have a cat, he is a lot like me. CRAZY. Still I like to quote singer/songwriter, Jimmy Buffett. " if we couldn't laugh, we would go insane". Thats still the way I am. Hey, 30 years+ of this business would send some over the edge, me? well I'm there already. Anyway, I am still living the dream of almost every little boy, riding a firetruck, and getting paid for it. After 9-11 the rest of the country has realized what we, Americans Bravest, already know. We are the first and last line of defense. We put it all on the line everyday. The firefighters in every small city and town had a bond with the 343 FDNY firefighters that were killed that day. We all do the same thing, only in different surroundings. You know, it does not seem that long ago, we were all graduating from WHS, wondering what would happen to us, what would we become, our lives were in front of us, now, a lot of us are thinking of retirement. This year, 2008, will be 39 years, since we left High and Prospect St's. If or when you drop in here, and it seems that there has been quite a few of you who have, well over 300 at this count, drop me a line. Yeah, I know. you have to join this site to get the email, I tried to sneak it in, but they were too slick for me. If a poor firefighter like me can join up, the rest of you can too. It would be nice to reconnect with old friends, and classmates. For what it is worth, a lot of you would not recognize Windham/Willimantic, or Eastern Connecticut for that matter. My things have really changed.
As I like to say to all, strangers, and friends alike,
BE SAFE,
Mike Tirone
