Michael's Story

Happily married more than 42 years with three wonderful adult kids and two grandchildren. At BV, member of stage/jazz band, pep band, marching band, concert band, CSF, math/science club, international friendship club. Took mostly XL classes (same students in most XL classes). After graduation, majored in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering at Purdue, IN on an Air Force ROTC scholarship. Entered a cooperative education program in Summer 1974, working every other semester/summer for five sessions with NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston--performed thermal analysis on Space Shuttle and cargo, predicting temperatures in orbit. To occupy my time in the evenings while working for NASA, I took a night school class at a community college during my second co-op session (Spring 1975). I met a wonderful young lady in class and we started spending all of our spare time together. By August, we were married and we both transferred to the University of Texas (again, on an Air Force ROTC scholarship). I graduated with a BS in Aerospace Engineering in 1978, and worked for a NASA contractor while waiting for my Air Force navigator school class to start. Carrie and I moved from the Houston area to Mather AFB in Rancho Cordova, CA and I completed navigator training in 1979. I trained later to be a KC-135 tanker navigator and the Air Force stationed us near Shreveport, LA for three years. After four years of trying to start a family, our first child (daughter) was born in 1981. Although we didn't know it at the time, she is severely retarded, autistic, and has a seizure disorder. In spite of this, we raised her as normally as possible for 19 years, until I retired from the Air Force and she moved into a group home. Our second child (son) was born in 1982, shortly before I transferred to the upper peninsula of Michigan. After four years in the "great white North", we transferred to Albuquerque, NM, where I developed operational test and evaluation (OT&E) procedures for the AF Operational Test and Evaluation Center. I was promoted to Major while at AFOTEC. In 1989, we transferred to Edwards AFB, CA,where I supervised 10 engineers and analysts performing OT&E on aircraft modifications to tanker and bomber aircraft. Our baby girl was born there in 1990. After 3 years in the Mojave Desert, we were transferred to Great Falls, MT, where I was Chief of Plans for the largest Air Refueling Wing in the Air Force. While there, I served as a church deacon in charge of benevolence--an eye opening experience! After several months, I was promoted to Lt Colonel and for a Pentagon assignment. From 1994-97, I worked for the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs, reviewing speeches and documents for public release and declassifying documents--one of them was from 1940 and required coordination with the British government, but most were from the 60's and dealt with the Vietnam War. a of evangelism--I developed the church's online presence, including the website. Toward the end of my tour, I was selected to command an Air Force ROTC detachment at the University of Miami. I fell in love with working in an academic environment--in addition to being an Air Force detachment commander, I was also the department chair (full professor) for Aerospace Studies. While there, Carrie worked as a substitute teacher, then went back to school and completed her degree. I am still in awe of the example she set for our children at the time: 63 college credit hours completed in 13 months, with a 3.94 GPA, all while continuing to raise a family that included a special needs child. But all good things had to come to an end, eventually, and I retired at the end of 1999 (several months after Carrie finished her degree). Carrie and I decided to move to a location near her elderly parents (nearly 20 years older than mine). This was a very fortunate decision, because her father was diagnosed with cancer that Spring and passed away that Summer. At least our kids finally got to know one set of grandparents before one of them passed away. Her mother is now 99 years old (as of October 2017) and is doing well. In the Austin, TX area, I started working in 1999 with the University of Texas, and retired as a senior systems analyst with the UT System Administration's Office of Employee Benefits in 2017. I handled the insurance eligibility data for 14 campuses and system administration, including six different types of insurance and multiple vendors for some. It's a challenge, which I really enjoyed. In my spare time, I've learned to repair antique clocks and opened a sideline business nine years ago. In May, 2011, my two year tour ended as president of Southwestern Chapter 15 of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors. I remain a member of the local Capital Area Watchmakers Clockmakers Guild. Carrie served for a while as the guild secretary and as the treasurer for the Southwestern Museum of Clocks and Watches. I also served as the church webmaster for a while. Our son married a fellow student eleven years ago and graduated from Abilene Christian University, then South Texas College of Law. He and his two team mates won the 2007 National Health Law Moot Court Competition at Southern Illinois University. Our son and daughter-in-law then moved to Missoula, MT where he studied as a visiting student for his final year of law school. He is now a criminal defense lawyer in Missoula, MT, and the father of two. Our youngest (daughter) graduated in 2012 with degrees Linguistics and East Asian Studies from the University of Texas and is now a graduate student of Chinese Language and Literature at the University of Washington in Seattle. As of early October, 2013, my paid membership expired, so I will be unable to read or respond to any messages. But I'm on Facebook and I've posted my email address under my public notes.
