Michael's Story
Life
Well, life has been interesting for me to say the least. I guess the best place to start is Junior High. I attended Dora for about a year and then moved on to Northside High. I spent about a year and a half there until ultimately I had to drop out due to extenuating circumstances. I wasnt happy being a high school dropout and had just gotten married with a baby on the way so I decided I needed to do something more than factory work. So, I quickly got my GED and got accepted to Devry. Probably one of the few colleges at the time that would have accepted me. We moved to Kansas City for a year while I went to school pursuing and Electrical Engineering degree. I decide after the second term that the price was going to be too high for the degree from a less than reputable school so I decided to quit while I was ahead and find another way that would result in 30-40k in debt. So we moved back to Arkansas where I decided to pursue the military. I chose the Air Force because they seemed the most school friendly. Unfortunately they werent accepting GED's at the time so I had to jump through some hoops and sneak in through a bit of a loophole. I had to attent some dinky little school in Kansas for 2 weeks where once I was done I was given an "official high school diploima". It was a silly course but it was good enough for the Air Force at the time. Once that was done they enlisted me shortly thereafter and I made it through Basic training without a sweat and moved on to my technical training schools, first at Lackland AFB and then at Vandenberg AFB, where I was trained as a missle maintainence technician specializing in cruise missles. From there I went on to Minot AFB, in North Dakota where I spent the next 3 years of my life freezing. It wasn't all bad though. The people were great. While in Minot, I continued pursuing my degree. While I was there I completed most of the requirements for an Air Force Commisioning program known as AECP. Before I could apply I had to have at least 45 credit hours of college completed including a couple upper level science and through the Calc II sequence. I knocked all of those out while there and was able to get my associates degree in Electronics whi...Expand for more
le I was doing so. I decided after a couple years though that unless I forced a change we would be in Minot forever, so I decided to cross train into Imagery Analysis. We went to San Angelo Tx for six months for my training and then were assigned to Offutt AFB in Nebraska. I worked at USSTRATCOM while at Offutt. Once I started work though I knew that I needed to get back on track to finish my degree so I went to the Education office to verify what I needed to take to finally meet the requirements for the program I wanted to apply for. It turned out that they had changed the requirements slightly and that I already met them, so on a very short deadline I put in for it and a few months later was accepted. I spent the next 3.5 years at the University of Nebraska in Omaha getting paid by the Air Force to get my Bachelors in Physics. Once done, I was commisioned as a 2 Lt and assigned to Patrick AFB Fl. I spent three years at that assignment and really enjoyed it. I just recently moved from there and am now at the Air Force Institute of Technology working on my Masters degree, again in physics. It feels like I have accomplished alot in a fairly short time and I am very happy with the life I have. I will be finishing up my Masters in a little over a year and dont have a clue what I will be doing after but Im sure my family and I will figure something out. This was really long but in reality I left a lot out. This is just the briefist of summaries of the last 12 years of my life. I wanted to tell it though because I am proud of what I have accomplished and I feel it is a testament to anyone who feels stuck in a seemingly dismal situation in thier life and thinks there is no way out. I can assure there is. I found one.
School
Went to school, made some friends in ROTC, moved away and joined the military and lost touch with every one. Now I regret it. Oh well.
College
Started my degree in Electrical Engineering 10 years ago. Dropped out for a while because of financial reasons. Joined the Air Force and started back on it but changed my major to physics. Just finished up this year and will be starting on my grad degree this fall. I plan to keep going until I have my doctoral degree.
