Michael's Story
Having attended three different High Schools in four years, graduated from West Albany HS in 1981andI left home to attend Mt. Hood Community College in the fall. After two years of playing in a great big band under Larry McVey which included at various times Ben Wolfe (of Harry Connick fame), Hollywood actor/director Todd Field, and a number of great musicians still working in the Northwest, I left Oregon for Indiana University.
While at IU I had the great fortune to study trumpet with Bill Adam and jazz with David Baker and Domenic Spera alongside many other folks who have become mainstays in the worlds of Jazz, Classical, and Popular music. I finally received my BM Jazz Studies in 1989 and followed with a MM Jazz Studies in 1991.

l I worked a variety of road gigs including short stints with Natalie Cole, Perry Como, Roger Williams, and The Guy Lombardo Orchestra.
My future wife and I moved to Washington, DC in the fall of 1992 where I freelanced and taught trumpet. From 1994-1998 I taught trumpet and music theory at the Duke Ellington School for the Arts.
Getting married in 1996, we moved to New York City in the summer of 1998 where my wife worked for The Marilyn Horne Foundation and I freelanced. Our son Eric was born in 2002.
We moved to Bloomington, Indiana in 2004 and I received a Doctorate in Brass Pedagogy in 2010. We are looking forward to my new job as Assistant Professor of Trumpet and Jazz at The University of North Carolina at Charlotte in the fall of 2011.
