Michael's Story

I'm going to return to Princeton, IN in a couple of years. I'll move to Belleville, IL next May when I retire from the Air Force. Life in the USAF has been good but at 54 I'm the "old man" in more ways than one. My bio... USAF and school teacher... Prior to entering the US Air Force "Mr" Harbison was the band director at the following schools: Lawrenceburg HS (1983-1986) Jay County HS (1982-1983) Randolph Southern JSHS (1979-1982) Lt Col Harbison works for the Communications Directorate for United States Central Command, MacDill AFB, Tampa, FL. I previously commanded the 82nd Communications Support Squadron at Langley AFB, Virginia. My squadron supported Air Operations Centers and radar integration testing for warfighters world-wide. In addition, I was Chief of Information Systems at the Air and Space Expeditionary Force Center. I led a team of programmers that developed the software applications used at all levels of Expeditionary Combat operations across the Air Force. My team consolidated these application-specific databases into a single, integrated system and house versions on both the classified and unclassified networks. I also coordinated automation improvements thru Business Process Re-engineering. I entered active duty in April 1986 and was commissioned in July 1986 through Officer Training School. I began service as a launch officer for the Minuteman II Intercontinental Ballistic Missile, serving as a crewmember, Instructor, Flight Commander, and Emergency War Order Operations Plans Officer. I cross-trained into communications in 1992 and served as a Software Project Manager and the Branch Chief of Mobility Support Systems at Air Mobility Command. ght and 5th Mission Plans Flight providing communications and air traffic services to Combatant Commanders and Joint Task Forces (JTFs). As HQ JTF-SWA Communications Operations Officer from June to September 1996, I led the effort to re-establish communication service following the Khobar Towers bombing while directing the relocation of major communications hubs for the USCENTCOM Area of Operations. I directed the operation of the Joint Staff's worldwide readiness and operations plan execution systems while assigned to the Pentagon. My assignment prior to moving to Langley AFB was Director of Communications and Information for the Air Component Command at Osan AB, Republic of Korea. Sandy (Thrasher) and I married in May 1980 and have one daughter, Ashley, and one son, Andrew. Ashley enlisted in the Air Force in 2005. She married Mike Taillard on 25 May 2007 and has twin sons, born 25 Feb 09. They're expecting a little girl in Nov 10. Andrew will graduate from Virginia Tech in May 11. I'll commission him as an Ensign in the US Navy on graduation day and he will marry Erica Owens in Aug 11. EDUCATION: 1995...
