Preceded in death by his parents, Jean Brostowitz Luhm and Fred August Luhm, sister Katie Silva, brothers Fred Luhm and Tom Luhm, and other beloved family members. Survived by his 3 children as well as 2 cherished granddaughters; Also survived by his siblings: Mary Bolton, Barbara Luhm, & Polly Bartels; also by Katie Jacobsen, and many more who loved him. Mike was a warm and welcoming man who enjoyed life, sailing, hot rods, and cooking, but above all took greatest joy in spending time with loved ones. He was always there to mentor, encourage and help, and brought out the best in others. He will be deeply missed. We, his kids, discovered his Classmates.com account just recently, and would welcome the opportunity to hear any stories or anecdotes of his high-school years you remember and would like to share. Your memories will be very much appreciated during this difficult time. Thank you! ~~~~ Mike Luhm was born in rural Wisconsin on October 17, 1947, the third of 7 children in a Polish-German household. When he was five the family moved to Whittier, and Mike became a Californian. He worked a number of jobs as a youngster and established a lifelong ethic of hard work and diligence. His fondest memories were of working on hot rods with his brothers and friends, and of backyard parties with plenty of friends and family for mingling. At 20, he was drafted and served in the US Army for nearly 2 years, primarily stationed in Holland. Upon his return, he settled in northern M...Expand for more
innesota working with his brother Tom on the iron range. He migrated to the Twin Cities shortly thereafter, living on Lake Minnetonka, sailing as much as possible while attending Brown Institute for electronic engineering. In 1977, he married Kathleen and settled in Plymouth, MN where they raised their three children. Despite living out his life in MN, he was always a Californian at heart and retained strong roots with family and friends out west. He also warmed many with his culinary delights of Mexicali cuisine. He was an avid gardener and loved taking the family to the lake for swimming or boating. As a field service engineer for medical equipment, at one point Mike’s work territory covered seven states. Driving to and from locations as needed, his absence was supplemented by frequent calls home from the road and trinkets from his travels. His philosophical and reflective nature was likely strengthened by his time on the road. Mike officially retired from GE after 37 years of service in 2014. Even with so much work travel, Mike enjoyed taking vacations and traveled for leisure every year. In the past year alone, he traveled to AZ, CA, WA, TX and WI all to visit loved ones. He enjoyed hot beaches, lakeside campfires, sailing in the Great Lakes and Pacific NW, and especially had a fondness for the great American road trip. He enjoyed taking different routes to visit CA, resulting in his family getting to see most of the Western US, and his Western US family getting to see more of him. He spent retirement enjoying simple pleasures of life: a good cup of coffee, a long conversation, or a game of cribbage.
