Michael's Story
I dropped out of college in 1972, and decided to check out a few other possibilities...
I played Rock 'n' Roll professionally in the Bay Area and elsewhere for 10 years (lead guitar), and had a few brushes with fame. Also, I served three apprenticeships as Chef. At age 25, I was employed as Executive Chef for Holiday Inn hotel chain, and was in a band that had some possibilities, but the ups and downs of the music business was too much for me. I also found the idea of a life in hotel management to be less than attractive.
At this point. I decided to restart my college career. I graduated magna cum laude with an A.B. in Biophysics from UC Berkeley in 1983, and received a PhD from the same program in 1988. Then, I began postdoctoral studies at Washington University, St. Louis, in Cancer Research and Mathematical Biology.

rs, I was recruited to the Biomedical Engineering program at the University of Iowa in 2000, where I am now a tenured Associate Professor in Biomedical Engineering and Pathology. My current research involves the development of live cell imaging technology (I have developed a system for making movies of cancer cells using a computer-controlled microscope) and applying this method towards the study of human cancer development. I also serve on several Federal Review Panels for the National Institutes of Health.
Although I have been married three times, the latest (and longest lasting) relationship has been going strong for 20 years. Fiorenza Ianzini and I were married in Rome, Italy (Fiorenza is an Italian biophysicist) and have a very talented 16 yr old who has won several dance titles in the Midwest region.
Overall, life has been very good to me, and the best times are just arriving.
