Michael A.'s Story

50 Years "Flown By" by Michael Martin Let's start with the most important stuff. My immediate family consists of my three adult children, Geoffrey, Stephanie, and Alexander by my late wife Kathy. I still reside in Rahway, New Jersey where I moved from New York City and bought a house in 1983. You will be pleased to know I have not been a total stranger to the west coast over the years with visits to parents and brothers, and on musical tours to San Francisco or Los Angeles with occasional stopovers on the way to Asia. The years since the Fall of 1965 are so full and complicated that I have decided to make it a bit simpler by sharing with you my professional thumbnail bio and you can find a way to forgive me for the change of tenses and the third person. HERE GOES! Mr. Martin has reached his fiftieth year in the music business as a French Horn player and music librarian with world-famous institutions. Since 1972, he has been associated with the horn section of the New York City Ballet Orchestra where he was tenured in 1977. He is looking forward to performing with the orchestra for his 43rd year. In 1985, Mr. Martin became the Orchestra Librarian for the New York City Ballet and continues to serve the company in that role. In 1995, he also became the Orchestra Librarian for the New York City Opera until it ceased operations. Mr. Martin entered The Juilliard School in 1965. He holds...Expand for more
a Bachelors and a Masters in music from Juilliard. Both undergraduate and graduate horn studies were taken with James Chambers. Undergraduate conducting studies were with Jorge Mester and Dennis Russell Davies; graduate work with Jean Morel and Alfred Wallenstein. In addition to his horn work with the Ballet Orchestra, Mr. Martin has been involved with a long list of Broadway shows including Sondheim shows ranging from Company to Into the Woods. He participated in Spoleto Festivals, both in Italy and Charleston, South Carolina. A founding member of the American Composers Orchestra, Mr. Martin played in that organization both at Alice Tully and Carnegie Halls. He has fond memories of touring with Alexander "œSasha" Schneider and the Brandenburg Ensemble. Private teaching, chamber music coaching, and various conducting engagements add enrichment to an already active musical career. WELL! - That was exhausting, if I do say so myself! My oldest son, Geoffrey, and I are active members of the Overholser Family Association (Lancaster Co., PA) one of the original Pennsylvania Dutch (Swiss/German) family names (1710) with farmland provided by William Penn. At present, I am president and Geoffrey is treasurer. I am so looking forward to the upcoming 50th Reunion (Class of 1965) Arroyo Grande Union High School. Here's hoping that there will also be a few Francis Judkins classmates present.
