Michael's Story
Mike attended Indiana University, Bloomington where he received a Bachelor’s degree in Astronomy and a doctorate degree in Vision Science. He received postdoctoral NIH fellowship training at the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta and the Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans. He served as a laboratory director, an Assistant Research Professor, and Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at LSU-NO for many years. He subsequently became the founding Director of the CLEVER Eye Institute of New Orleans. Mike also served as a Department of the Army Senior Scientist in military medicine at USAARL in Fort Rucker, Alabama, and was a Command Captain in Emergency Management for the City of New Orleans. the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), and received the Civilian Service Commendation Medal from the Secretary of the Army. He was nominated for the Innovation in Science and Medicine Award from the Euretina Society, in addition to receiving many other career honors. He has numerous patents for inventions in the fields of diagnostic medicine and surgery. He has been an editor for many scientific journals, and has been a medical device consultant to more than 30 companies. He has been a long-standing member of ARVO, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. He is currently semi-retired, but continues as an active editorial board member for the journals Cornea and Medicine.
