Michele's Story

Life I've been married to another Cumberland High School graduate, Joe Boulay (class of 1973) for 30 years! Our entire lives have revolved around or in the ocean. We bought our first sailboat, a Sunfish in 1978 and got hooked on the sport. That sunfish is still commissioned each winter when Joe races her in a "frostbite racing program at Edgewood Yacht Club. I bought my own sunfish in 1991 and compete against Joe and the other guys every Sunday as long as the temps are below freezing. In September, 2003, Joe and I sailed away to the Bahamas and lived aboard our cruising sailboat Simple Life returning in July of 2004. Since at that time we didn't have refrigeration installed on board. Joe had to dive the reefs most days to spear our dinner. We'd jerry can water from abandoned cisterns and often catch rainwater to replenish our water tanks. Most of the year was spent at uninhabited islands while anchoring out. In other words no marinas, and no facilities or ammenities. It was difficult but we'd do it again in a heartbeat. In fact...Expand for more
we are planning to sail away again for an extended period (possibly years) in June of 2009. We'd like to return to the Bahamas and continue south toward the Dominican Republic and eventually down island to Trinidad. Right now we are upgrading many of the systems aboard Simple Life in preparation for our departure. I'm a writer and photographer and you can check out a couple of my recent articles in Latitudes and Attitudes Magazine March, 2007, Cruising World Magazine December 2006. My book Leave the Shore Behind was published in January 2007, and it recounts the story of our year of sailing down the eastern seaboard crossing the Gulf Stream and living aboard in the Bahamas. It's available on Amazon.com or you can email me and I'll give you a discount. When I'm not writing I'm promoting my book by giving seminars on the cruising life at boat shows. My next gig is the New England Boat Show in Boston in January, 2007. So far, life has been a great adventure. I'm never disappointed and always look forward to the next chapter.
