Michele's Story

It's been an interesting life so far - adventurous even! Hard work to obtain my education. A great career in the military. Lots of travel around the world. All this surrounded by a great family! I was born in San Francisco, but we moved down to San Mateo when I was a toddler. When I was five, we moved to the island of Guam where we stayed for ten years. My parents sent me back to the states before they returned so I could start high school here. I lived with an aunt and uncle in Belmont and spent my Freshman year at Carlmont High. Mom and Dad and my siblings came back from Guam later that year, we moved into our old house in San Mateo and I started at San Mateo High School beginning with my Sophomore year. After high school, I went to CSM on and off for five years, finishing less than 2 years of college while there. I lived in Haight Ashbury for a while, worked a lot of meaningless jobs, dropped out of CSM for health reasons and finally enlisted in the Army in 1975 as a way to finish my education. The Army was very good to me. I ended up serving a full 24 years, retiring in 1998 as a Lieutenant Colonel. When I enlisted in the Army I had less than 2 yea...Expand for more
rs of education. When I retired I had a Masters Degree from Stanford University. Russ and I met and married in the Army. He is a farm boy from Wisconsin, while I consider myself to be the San Francisco city girl. It's one thing to be so different when you have a sheltering, all-encompassing environment like the military - quite another to build a life outside the military. From very early in our marriage we talked about what we wanted and where we would retire. We made a compromise list of qualities we wanted in our retirement life: no more than 2 hours from great skiing; not in a big city (for him), but no more than 90 minutes away from one (for me); nowhere east of the Mississippi - didn't want to ski on ice the rest of our lives; and on and on. We began to eliminate states over the years - California - too expensive; Utah - politics; Arizona and New Mexico - not enough great skiing. We were down to Oregon or Colorado when the Army assigned me to Colorado Springs in 1997. That was it. We fell in love with the place and here we are today. Part of the reason I retired from the Army in 1998 was because they were going to reassign me to New Jersey! Yikes!
