Michele ('chele)'s Story
After high School I went to Cal Poly, Pomona, graduating with a BS in biology in 1971. I stayed on to get a teaching credential in 1973. In 1974, I moved to Nenana, Alaska, which is south west of Fairbanks, and taught there 4 years. Then I moved to the Bush - which means places accessible by plane or boat (or snow machine in the winter). I taught is the village of Kaltag on the Yukon River for 3 years. I took a year off and traveled all over the States. Then I moved to Huslia, which is on the Koyukuk River. I met my husband, Lincoln, there. We have 3 daughters. here another 4 years, then moved to the Fairbanks area. I taught at an alternative school for 6 years, then transferred to North Pole High School. I ended my teaching career there in 2014, after 38 years. I lived in a house on my grandparents' homestead and have lots of relatives nearby. I travel to Huslia, where I still have a house, when I can. That hasn't been too often, as I care for my 2 grandchildren while their parents are at work. I haven't been back to Hacienda Heights but once in all that time. My parents are gone and my brothers live in Grass Valley, CA, one sister in San Diego area and one in the Salt Lake City area.
