Michelle's Story

Life After graduating from Platteview, I attended the University of Wyoming for two years and then transferred to UNO in '89. I applied to Medical Technology School at UNMC in '91. After I graduated from Medical Technology School in '92, I got a job at Methodist Hospital in Omaha working nights in the laboratory. Then, that same year, I met Derrick. He and I went out about three years before he was accepted into Medical School in Charleston, SC. After he moved away, I thought we were done. I went to visit him a couple of times in '95 and then he popped the question. So...I moved to Charleston where I worked at the Medical Univ. of SC in the tissue typing lab (performing compatibility testing for organ transplants), we got married in '96, had "Q" our first child in '98, and Derrick graduated from Medical School in '99. We moved to Kansas City, MO. for Derrick's residency program and lived there for about 3 years, meanwhile having child #2 (Turner-after Turner Gill-great NU quarterback in early 80's) and child #3 (Kendall). Moved to Papillion in '02 (lived right behind the high school). In fact, Mike Camerlinck provided lawn service for us while we lived there. After a year, we moved to Lincoln (NE) and have been there ever since. School I enjoyed my time at Platteview. I'd have to say that my freshman year was the highlight since I got to "start" on the varsity basketball team. Playing with Dena Gosch, Angie Hanson, Kelli Williams, Julie Foged, and all the others was a blast. Watching the football team win the state championship was awesome too. The senior class that year had some great athletes (and some cuties, at that!) Sophomore year was a different story....kind of depressing. All I recall from that year was that our girl's basketball team was not very good and Blake Kentsmith died. After that happened the rest of the year was a blur. Jun...Expand for more
ior year we went to state in basketball-that was fun because we hardly ran any offense that year. Mr. Buza let us run-and-gun it like we were on the playground. Playing with Paula Erhart, Julie Foged, Cami Andersen, and my sister, Nay was the best. Senior year rolled around and I was ready to get out of there. I think that I had three study halls and only five classes. I was quite the slacker but I was tired of school. We stunk in volleyball, I don't even think we won one game. Basketball we started out like 8-0 and then fell apart and lost our last 7 or 8 games. Dave Weber from Channel 6 came out to school and interviewed my sister and I because we were sisters playing on the same team so that was kind of cool. One other highlight about '87 was sitting in The Commons area during study halls and playing UNO. Even though school got to be a bit of drag there toward the end, I'm glad that I went to school with the people I did. Especially with the guys that made me laugh all the time: Bob Howell (R.I.P.)-he was the burping king, Ken Kurth (what a character-hilarious), Mike Camerlinck, Tab Newman....just to name a few. College Attended the University of Wyoming from '87-'89 where I studied Pharmacy/Nursing. I also tried to play basketball at Wyoming but it was too hectic between ball and school work. In '89 I tranferred to UNO to continue studying nursing because I couldn't afford to stay at Wyoming. Wasn't too happy about that. Got tired of nursing and almost went into the Air Force when I got a job at Childrens Hospital in the laboratory as a receptionist. Applied to the Medical Technology program at UNMC in Omaha and (long story short) I am now officially a Clinical Laboratory Scientist. Workplace I currently work in the laboratory at St. Elizabeth Regional Medical Center in Lincoln part-time (16 hours/week). I mainly work in the Blood Bank.
