Michelle's Story
When I graduated I wanted to be a nurse. After that didn't work out so well, I went to school to become a vet tech. Math and metrics didn't agree with me, so I changed my major to English and finally got my BA in English/Creative writing. Since I discovered how much I enjoyed writing poetry, I joined a local group of poets, one of whom encouraged me to become a substitute teacher for the LAUSD. That's my current career - yes, quite a late bloomer - but the district has excellent benefits and pay, although it's not easy work. So, I've switched from one side of the desk ...Expand for more
in the classroom to the other.
In addition, what I do for fun is go to poetry workshops and readings, volunteer with animals at a local humane society. I adopted my cat, Sasha, from the shelter where I volunteer. Working with animals gives me a sense of helping place dogs and cats in good and loving homes. Writing poetry - many times about animals - releases my creative side that I could never bring out when I was taking scientific courses. My goal in my writing is to be published (for pay), although I've been published many times in local chapbooks and anthologies.
