Michelle's Story
Hi! Just wanted to share my story from the past year. In short, I found a lump in my breast in December 2007 and found that it was cancerous....of course! After a lumpectomy, I went through 4 months of chemotherapy at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. Lost my hair, felt awful, but got through it. During this time, I opted to have special gene testing done due to my family's history of cancer. Turns out I was positive for BRCA1, which meant that I had a much greater chance of getting breast cancer again or ovarian cancer. Chances were a bit higher for any other typ...Expand for more
e of cancer as well. Therefore, I decided to take preventative measures and had a double mastectomy with reconstructive surgery in June and a full hysterectomy (just last week). Now I know I've done everything I can to prevent cancer from returning and be there for my children as they grow older. You're probably asking why I'm sharing such a personal story? Well, I'm not afraid to talk about it and if there's anyone out there (and I'm sure there is) that reads this and has been diagnosed, I would be happy to be a supportive advocate for you as so many have done for me.
