Michelle's Story

Life I'm still living happily in Houston, Texas, with my husband Robin (twenty years as of 9/21/2016). We still don't have any children yet, but hey...when it happens, it happens. Meanwhile we're enjoying life and enjoying each other. Being homeowners is great, and we're learning new things all the time. There's no way we could have afforded a nice home like this in California without both of us working highly stressful jobs. Well, I hope everyone is well and happy. Life truly is good if you allow yourself to enjoy it and don't get caught up in comparing yourself to other people. There's always somebody who makes more money than you do, is smarter than you are, or has more "stuff" than you do; so be careful not to get caught in that vicious cycle of thinking "I'd really be happy if I just had more <blank>." To enjoy or not to enjoy life is really your choice. Ya'll take care now! *SMILE* College After high school I attended Foothill College and tried to decide what I wanted to do. After taking a bunch of G.E. courses I decided to try Accounting as my major, with the intent of transferring to a Cal State University to finish the Accounting program and get a degree. Well, I did transfer to Cal State Hayward with the INTENT of getting a degree in Accounting, but after taking some of the Intermediate Accounting courses I decided that wasn't really what I wanted to do. So I changed my major to Business Administration with a minor in French instead of an option within the School of Business (don't ask me why -- I got good grades in French class at WHS). I didn't really use that degree except to put on my resume that I GOT one. I'm NOW enrolled at the Academy of Health Care Professions in Houston, TX, in their Medical Billing and Coding program; and I'll start that on Jan. 8th, 2003. Not terribly exciting, I know, but I don't need for EVERYTHING in my life to be exciting. Besides, there's a high demand for that type of work and it's in an industry ...Expand for more
that's almost entirely recession-proof. After all, who -- aside from the dead -- DOESN'T need health care? If all goes well I'll complete that program (including a 4-5 week externship) sometime in July. It feels good to be learning something again, especially something that people will actually PAY me to do. :-) UPDATE: Wow! It didn't hit me until just now how long it's been since I updated anything about my "story". As it stands now (January 21, 2008) I am between jobs. I am considering a career in medical transcription. I have a "head start" in that I have already completed some of the coursework, such as medical terminology and anatomy & physiology. I just need more training. The problem is that we (like a lot of American families these days) are in debt, and I do NOT want to take on more debt to go to school. So my short-term plan is to work on a temporary/contract basis in order to pay down (or off) some of our debt before I invest more money in medical transcription training at one of the community colleges here in Houston. Why medical transcription, you may ask? Well, for one thing, I like to type. I'm pretty good at it, scoring consistently in the high-60's (words per minute) on every typing test I've taken in the last year. I just need more practice, because many MT's type 80 wpm or better. Second, I am interested in all things medical. Thirdly and finally, I want to do something that I can do easily from home. I want to get my training at a community college rather than through one of those correspondence schools because I don't believe the latter would be taken very seriously (if anyone reading this has gotten a good job -- and still has it -- after having taken courses through distance learning, I would love to hear your story). Anyway, we still enjoy living in Houston (at least most of the year). We are both born-again Christians and we have always trusted God to provide for us. We don't expect Him to stop now. :-)
