Michelle's Story

Life Married to Scott Conkling (class of 74) 29 years. Children: Erin Michelle 28yo Jennifer Lyn 26 yo Grand children: Austin Taylor 8 yo Jaden Alexander 5 yo Garrett Mathew 6 yo Caleb Reese 3yo Emily Nicole 2 months old We have no pets at present but we sure have had our share over our lifetime together. I like little "yippee" dogs and Scott likes big dogs. We live in Florida. We settled here after Scott retired after 22 years from the Navy 9 years ago. We wanted to be close to our children and grandchildren. My twin sister Maureen (remember her?) and my brother Todd live in Florida. My dad lives 2 hours from us. My mom lived with Scott and I for 7 months until her death in 2003. Never thought we would all end up in Florida. We own our home and have lived at this address for the past 19 years School I loved the football games and being in the Colorguard. The memories of how we flipped and threw those guns scares the daylights out of me now. The proms and the special time with friends afterwards was fun. I will always remember the prom night in March that my parents heated the pool so we could go swimming after. The steam was so thick, no one could see who was in the pool. When you jumped in, you had to hope no one was under you!! College Country College of Morris : graduated 1977 Associate Degree in Nursing I can't understand how I made the drive to the college everyday and better yet driving to and from class in bad weather. You had to walk forever from the parking lot to classes University of Phoenix : 2000 Bachelor of Science in Nursing Had to prove I could go on in school despite my middle years! University of Phoenix: 2002 Masters...Expand for more
of Science in Nursing What the heck is a few more years!! University of Florida: 2005 Certificate in Midwifery/advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner Spent 27 years as a L/D nurse---how hard can the program be? Whatever was I thinking....this stuff was hard to learn! My desire is to never enter a classroom as a student again.....well for awhile anyway. I can't see myself as a PhD. Workplace The stories I could tell as a labor & delivery nurse!! I started as a staff nurse in a small hospital in Maine. We were transferred to Florida and I worked as a L/D nurse in a moderate size community hospital. I helped create the sibling preparation class that continues to this day. We were then transferred back to Maine; I picked up my old L/D job but became the charge relief nurse. I also coordinated the Childbirth preparation classes We transferred back to Florida for the last time. I once again picked up my old job once again. I was a charge nurse until I left for a new career. I also served as the Pregnancy Loss Bereavement Coordinator and created patient and staff education materials. I wrote a storybook for children about the loss of a pregnancy. I worked at this hospital for 21 and a half years. It was difficult to leave. I now work with a large private OB/GYN practice providing women's health care, ob care and delivering babies. I deliver at the very hospital I worked at as a L/D nurse. I have my own patient load and enjoy what I do. Now I get paid to deliver babies, I wonder how many I delivered before this when the doctor didn't make it in time? Military The only military connection I have is a military wife. Scott and I married in 1977 and I followed him where ever the Navy sent him. The Navy was good to us and we only had 2 (5 month) deployments away from each other.
